It looks like Kojima Pearls has access to an old inventory of akoya pearls from Pacific Pearls in Tokyo (original inventory). I’m curious what this means in terms of the quality, luster etc. @yssie — any ideas?

From a historical perspective, old pearls might be quite cool if that's what you value. But from a pure pearl standpoint, age doesn't necessarily tend to correlate with any kind of quality factors upwards unless they were owned by a certain historical figure, or they hold historical significance in pearl history. Mikimoto NYC has Marilyn Monroe's pearl strand in their boutique on display last I was there-- you can bet those pearls are valued for their historical significance more than any certain quality factor. Beyond this if anything age would impact pearl value in a negative way depending on how they were cared for or worn over that time.

I have seen Marilyn's pearl strand at a Mikimoto exhibition in London in ? 2013, along with the famous convertible Yaguruma Sash Clip in person, and concur with you that the pearls in the strand did not take my breath away!
