Kate's new Ruby ring

This showed up in some recent news items on the Duchess of Cambridge: a striking right-hand solitaire that I presume is a ruby but might be a spinel. Rather large, gold double prongs, a platinum or white gold band. You are not, at least not in a closer shot. To me the first pic seemed liike a square emerald, but, no.
