Hi there,

I''m looking at getting a 0.5 - 0.65 carat RB diamond for a solitaire half-bezel set e-ring in white gold. Just wondering whether K (top view) in A Cut Above (H&A) will look yellowish in WG. I''m not really concerned abt the side view cos i dun think anyone will bother looking anyway.

None of my friends here (in Singapore) has any experience cos the trend is to go for super high colour and clarity (without bothering abt the cut)!

I was initially thinking of getting a high colour too, but after reading the threads here, i''ve kinda changed my mind. I''d rather go low on colour (as long as it doesn''t really show) and get a really gd cut.

Anyone had experience wif a K colour diamond on white gold? Pls show me ur bling!!!

If you don''t mind the white gold or platinum looking whiter than the stone, then K color is fine. It really depends on the look you are trying to achieve. If you want a stone that will face up white, then really the farthest you can go would be GIA "I" color.

Oh, actually what i want is for the stone to at least look AS WHITE AS the band.
Looking at some of the threads, it seems like it's possible for K to look as white, or even whiter than the WG band from top view.
Any comments on this?

I think all color of diamonds are wonderful, really! But I can tell you when I recently tried on diamond earrings and the jeweler let me walk outside with a mirror, I could see slight yellow tint face up in J and K stones. I couldn''t see it in I, H, or above. Some people love a little warmth in the color of a stone and I think that is great! But truly, if you say you want the stone to be as white as the metal, I am thinking you may need to stick to I or J. You''re out of the near colorless range when you get into K color.

If all of your friends have colorless stones, I think a K will look tinted in comparison.

Search the forums for the thread on I and J color in platinum. I know there are at least 2 big threads of that. There are some K stones in pictured there that face white. I think all of those Ks have ideal cut and strong blue fluorescence, though. The 5 - 6 mm size is going to help hide color, though. The larger stones will show tint. Really, the high end of H is where I'd stop the near-colorless grade. Lots of people see tint at I and lower. White gold that's rhodium plated will be bright white. If you leave off the rhodium, it will be more tinted than the platinum and less contrast with a slightly tinted stone like K.

Well, i guess my friends and i won't be comparing our stones side-by-side, but yeah, guess i'll have to rethink the "K". Mayb a J will do good. I saw the "J"s on the various threads. Looks terrific!

Was just wondering how much more yellow will a K be, cos getting K instead of J will allow me to go up by around 0.1 carat for about the same price. Couldn't really gauge well cos all the K rocks around are so huge! Mine's just a stone among the rocks...

All I can tell you is that I read on here that Mara has a J and her friend has a K, and she could tell the difference in the two. So I do think you should stick to the near colorless range and realize that some J''s are going to probably appear whiter than others as well.

If your friends are catty about color, and that concerns you, I''d get a setting that *does* cover the sides of the diamond.... not necessarily a full bezel, but something with ornate sides etc that will covr the side view just in case they do start looking at it from the sde... because from the *top*they''ll be blown away by the dazzle of the ideal cut stone over their colorless duds.

I''m planning to get my diamond from WF (but not the setting). So i guess i shud jus get them to take some photos of the diamond face up beside a white gold ring and let my eyes tell me whether to get a K, J, or whatever.

I have an "I" that faces up blazing white but I can see a tint of light yellow from the sides (although I do have an EC not a RB). "I" is as high as I would go but it is a personal decision. My stone is as white as my PLT.

Hi Kristen! I have a K in platinum and I love it! When I was considering stones I was initially looking for I or J stones .75-.82ct. But then I started looking and bigger sizes

around 1ct and of course the bigger price tags that come with them. So then I started thinking, K is one step down from J, how bad can it be?? So I found a K that had great angles and dimensions, great light return, everything on paper looked good. The only thing left was to see it in person. I had it brought into WF, they told me it looked amazing, and faced up like a G. Good news! So then I had it sent to me so I could see it. Honestly it took me a couple of hours to fall in love with it. It was the first time I'd really held a real diamond of that color, and especially an ideal cut one. Anyways, I soon came to find that this stone looks great in 99% of the lighting situations I'm in. There are a few wierd places, like sometimes in the car, where it looks tinted yellow on the sides. But during the day it's a fireball from the top, and white, and thats how I normally look at it. And other people never look at the sides of my ring unless I take it off and show it to them.

If you get an ideal cut, great light return K stone, I think it will most likely be beautiful. You will have to test it out yourself though to see if you love it. I do not regret getting my K at all! Not one bit!

Here's a thread of Ks in platinum and WG. Take a look. I think they're gorgeous!

Hello Gladys,

First, can I say on behalf of the ladies and guys who live in Singapore (note that I didn't say "Singaporeans", as I am not one, but I have been living here for the last five years and feel compelled to defend Singapore-residents - as well as Singaporeans!

): It is not true that the "trend" is all about colour and clarity and that we are not "bothered" or do not know anything about cut. I don't know where you hang out and whom (or perhaps, I am making an educated guess here) your friends are (maybe they're very very "young"), but plenty of Singapore PRs and Singaporeans know that cut is the most important amongst the four C's and I personally know plenty of people who would not buy anything except the "best" cuts available (ie. AGS "ideal cut" or GIA "excellent", or something as close to those as possible). Sure, we are fussy when it comes to colour and clarity but that I think that is because we're a discerning lot!

.

As far as the colour K is concerned, I agree with one earlier poster that if you can find a stone with fluorescence, it would certainly help it to look "whiter". But if you are concerned about how the stone faces up, and I think you are, you'd be better off going for a better colour grade, lowest an I (and sacrifice a bit on size) and perhaps hopefully with fluoro. I would suggest that you go with an online vendor in the US that can offer you an upgrade policy, in case you want to upgrade to a larger stone in the future (and you most probably will, as many of us PS'ers seem to have done). Make sure they also have a return policy (bear in mind the time it would take for the stone to get to Singapore and maybe all the way back to the US). Don't forget GST, insurance (both ways) etc.

Just my 2 cents.

i have a k colored stone in some white gold earrings and they are most definitely yellow. still look nice though.

Hi lienTN,

Yup, my friends are all young pple (so am i). I was actually making a comment about my friends, rather than Singaporeans (or residents) in general. I guess it sounded misleading cos i threw the word "Singapore" in. Allow me to correct myself, i was just trying to give u guys an idea of where my crowd is from actually.

Hi Sunkist,

After seeing ur ring, i think i'll definitely still give K stones a chance! But definitely only if they look as gd as urs. I saw ur stone last night before i went to bed and i actually DREAMT abt it!!

Thanx for the tut, diamondseeker!

Actually i do find the K colour inside the tut quite acceptable. Can hardly see the colour if it weren''t for the fact tt they put it side by side wif a D. Guess i''m not so sensitive to yellow tints!
