Hi,
I've been lurking for a while and have finally bought my first diamond. And its an old cut. :appl: I got it off ebay after watching lots and trying to read as much as possible. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...OTmHaHU%3D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT

So, now.... what should be my next step? I would like to confirm its at least what the auction says, but (obviously from shopping on ebay) I rather not spend a ton of money. I'm lucky this was in the budget.

Should i take it some where and ask for an appraisal? I'm in the DC area and noticed Martin Fuller has a few mentions on PS. Is there someone better with older cuts than others? Or is there another name for the process of just checking that the diamond is real and the stats are correct or in range?

There is a 7 day full return window. So, I rather find out stuff now, but wasn't sure if this is a situation of "if you love it, don't look for trouble"

I only took a quick peek just now and I love it! So sparkly and faces up pretty much white. You can see some slight tint on the side, but very minimal. With an uncertified M i was worried it was really going to be a lower color and much more yellow.

My plans are a bezeled/milgrained necklace.

I took the best pics I can, but its so hard. The tint is not as noticeable IRL.

Oh my gosh!! You got a great deal. And, I was watching that diamond too, and considering bidding on it. I'm so jealous!! I have no advice for you on your next step, but it sounds like you're on the right track.

My answer is Yes! If you love it don't look for trouble!

Don't worry, your diamond is near M, large culet, fair cut (regular for an old cut) and SI clarity. No doubt!

Congrats for this beauty!

Martin Fuller is delightful and very good. But he charges something like $250 a hour and you must use at least an hour. He appraised my 2ct European cut ring, .78 CTW earrings, and husband's modern Tag watch. I would trust him with anything, he lectures at GIA London. I buy a lot of old cuts off ebay and you can't expect precise grading nor is that what you are paying for when you drop $400 for a 3/4ct stone. I confirm an ebay diamond is real with a diamond beam tester, determine if the inclusions are significantly worse than described and look at the color compared to those I know the grade of. Lower colors are VERY tough to pinpoint a consistent opinion of the color on even for a pro. You could take it to a local jeweler you trust and ask if it seems consistent with M SI1.

Thanks!

Yeah, I wasn't expecting 100% guarantee with shopping thru ebay vs JbEG or GOG etc. I just want to make sure i make appropriate steps after an ebay purchase, esp since i made sure to find a seller with a 100% return policy.

Since this is my first diamond- i don't have another known graded color/clarity to compare it to. I'm not too concerned with the color- its not going to make me send it back if its lower or higher- but just want to know for future reference.

Any recommendation on DC area jewelers to trust? I think my biggest concern is that its real and not man made etc.

Just moved here from Chicago, so not sure where to start. I am in the district, but very open to traveling to VA or MD etc.

Thanks again for the reassurance and knowledge.

Tiny Jewel Box in Dupont is good and carries many antiques. Any jeweler should have the means to test it though. It would be a trek, but for custom work I like Hunt Country in Loudon county.
