I am wondering if this appraisal is worded correctly. I only paid $30 for it.

Appraisal as follows:
1. One 14k white gold designer ring with slightly raised curved cross over styled four claw shoulder settings and a further raised curved four claw main setting in the center.
Click here to see pics of the ring

The shoulder settings contain two round brilliant cut diamonds. One of the diamonds measure 4.05mm in diameter and weighs approximately 0.25cts. The clarity grade of the diamond is VS2 with a colour grade of G/H. The cutting grade of the diamond is class 2A.

One of the diamonds measure 4.12mm in diameter and weighs approximately 0.26 cts. The clarity grade of the diamond is class 2A.

The main setting contains one round brilliant cut diamond. The diamond measures 4.95mm in diameter by 3.10mm in depth and weighs approximately 0.47cts. The clarity grade of the diamond is VS1 with a colour grade of F/G. The cutting grade of the diamond is class 1. The total weight of the ring is 3.30grams

The AGS report on the center stone says this:
Weight: 0.487 cts
Diameter: 5.04 (5.02-5.07 [1.0%]
Total Depth: % 61.8 (3.12mm)
Crown Angle: ‘ 33.8 (33.6 - 34.1)
Crown Height: % 14.7 (14.5 - 15.1)
Pavil Angle: ‘ 41.0 (40.8 - 41.1)
Pavil Depth: % 43.0 (42.6 - 43.4)
Culet: % 0.6 V. Small
Table Size: % 56.0 (55.6 - 56.5)
Girdle Thickness: 1.7% (0.8 - 2.4) Medium

Diamond Quality Document:
Cut Grade:
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Proportions: Ideal

Colour Grade: AGS 1.0 (F)

Clarity Grade: AGS 4 (VS2)

It looks like the appraiser estimated my diamond to be a little smaller than it actually is. He gave me a higher clarity grade, and the judged the colour correctly.
What is diamond cutting class 1? If my ring were stolen, would that class 1 cover the cut quality I have here?

I am not too worried about the side stones, those are only 1/4 ct stones, and their appraisal is not as important as the center stone.

Is this appraisal descriptive enough in case of theft, or accident?

Does no one have an opinion on this appraisal?

not really in my opinion but its the norm.
Id submit it with actual photo's of the ring attached to it.
date and sign the photos and submit them to your agent to keep copies of and keep a set for yourself.
The report combined with some photos and photo copies of all reciepts and the cert should be enough.
Keep the original cert and submit a photo-copy.
I recomend putting all the originals in a safe deposit box.

For my reasoning see this thread:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/why-have-a-certed-diamond-appraised.10662/

my 4th post in that thread.
Its just as valid for the whole ring as for the diamond by itself.

Good Morning Volred,

Actually, I think it’s better than typical but I do see several issues that you might want to discuss with the appraiser before binding it to an insurance policy.

1) He quotes an AGS report as a source of information and he apparently disagrees with it. The report number should be included in the description and a copy of the report included. Does he feel that the report is inaccurate or that it doesn't apply to the subject stone? If it's inaccurate, why is he quoting it? If it's not relevant, why did he include it at all?

2)Cut class 1 and 2A are GIA cut grades. You can read about what they mean at www.gia.edu. It’s a tad unusual to use AGS grading terms for clarity and color and GIA terms for cut but there's nothing specifically wrong with it. The scales being used should be explained elsewhere in the document. Cut class 1 is GIA’s top grade and includes what AGS calls ‘ideal’ on their DQD reports.

3)He mentions that it’s a designer piece but does not mention who that designer is. If you expect replacement with a particular designers work, you should list them in the document.

4)I presume that there are other pages to the appraisal because there is quite a bit of other important information that should be included to call it an appraisal.

$30 is a very low price if the remainder of the document is properly done. Typical charges for such a job would be more like $75-$100.

Pretty good for 30 bucks.

My impression is that you didn't show the AGS report to the appraiser, and the findings in italics are his, while the findings in regular font are from the AGS report you received with the stone.

If so, then he did a pretty good abbreviated job of describing the ring, and if you submit the AGS report along with his appraisal and photos, then you should be adequately covered from an insurance standpoint.

That is, of course, if the value he assigned adequately covers the piece. Neil makes a good point as well about listing the designer. Does any of your other paperwork list the designer's name? If so, submit it along with the appraisal and AGS Report.

As Storm suggests, submit copies of everything and store the originals in a safe place. Safety deposit box is not a bad idea.
