I realized today that one of my favourite cutters hasn´t been mentioned here (or at least since I joined).

John Dyer is fantastic! Although his more traditional cuts are beautiful, he really shines in specialty, modern cuts. His site is pure eyecandy (although no prices, as he is trade only

).

Disclaimer: I have no link to John, but I won´t be sad if some PSers decide to set some of his beauties and post plenty of pictures!

He''s one of my favorites as well, but I''m not sure if you can purchase his stones directly through him, but through a middleman like Richard Wise.

Neat cuts!

Very intricate and beautiful stones. Does anyone here own one of his gems??

I found his website. His stones are gorgeous. http://www.johndyergems.com/onlinecatalogpg1.html

I was just perusing his website earlier today!

That is true - he doesn´t deal with end customers. I am not too happy about this, as I want to have an idea of his price point. I feel awkward asking a middle man to price several stones for me, knowing there is a very good chance they will be out of my budget.

A few months ago, Dyer had some Madagascan material. It''s a cross between an aquamarine and an emerald and goes by the trade name "Lagoon Beryl." I would like to get my grubby paws on some of that.

Me too--just found a photo--dreamy color.

Oh wow! That is some SERIOUS eye candy!

He''s one of the best - very avant garde both technically and artistically. A winner of some 26 cutting awards - at last count!

I believe he sells a fair bit to jewelry designers. Oh, and he doesn''t work for peanuts, but most of his pieces are stunning.

Gary,

What''s the quality of his rough like? Thanks.

John is part of another gemological forum I belong to. He always posts his cuts on there. I''m always drooling.

I communicated with him about 6 weeks ago about one of his Mali garnets which I am going to buy. Also, have you seen the "gypsy rose" garnets? They''re really beautiful.

WOW!!!!!!

They are gorgeous and so unique. I''d love to own one of his pieces...a true work of art!

That stuff is amazing. I realize that I have no idea what I am asking but how do normal people go about getting one of those. I mean is it worth it to go through the middle man to purchase say a blue topaz or amethyst?

EL - I don''t believe he deals directly with the public, so you would have to go through a retaler. I think that''s the only way you can find out prices.

Hello one and all, thanks so much for all the appreciation!

In answer to some of the questions asked here:

No I do not sell directly to consumers, all gems must be purchased through a retailer.

I would however be happy to talk to you and tell you approximate retail prices on some items if you are not comfortable asking your retailer to get this information for you.

(I hope that this kind of post is acceptable to the moderators, I am not trying to arouse interest in my merchandise, just trying to answer some questions after the interest has already been aroused.)

Happy new year to you all!

Welcome John, its great to have you with us!

Hi John

Good to hear from your and your cuts are wonderful. I have my eye on a particular gemstone so will email you via your website. You do sell to the retailers in the UK don''t you?

John,

Welcome! I''ve been eyeing your lagoon beryl for months.

H - I have no idea, but assume top.
Thanks.

Welcome John!

I''d like to learn more about the lagoon color beryl.

Hello all,
Yes I do sell to retailers in the UK, I usually see quite a number of them during the Tucson gem show so if your retailer is coming and you want something just let them know.

As to the Lagoon Beryl, it is a beautiful material that I cut but I do not own it myself. I had worked out a deal with the owners to cut it. (I almost never do this but this was an exception to the rule).

Is there something specific you would like to know about it?

Hi again John,

What distinguishes Lagoon beryl from aquamarine and green beryl or emerald?

Hi!

The Lagoon Beryl is different from both emerald and aquamarine because it is apparently a mix of the two gems.

It has the iron component of aquamarine and also the chromium and vanadium of emerald. The chromium and vanadium are not strong enough to overpower the blue and thus the color ends up being a blue green that is not really like any of the greener aquas.

It looks more like one of the copper bearing tourmalines from Africa.

I am going to try to attach a couple of pictures here but I have never done it before so who knows if it will work.

Oh, it''s just lovely!

Thanks, John. I''d love to see some in person. Will either you or the rough owners be at Tucson?

Cool stone, thanks for the quick overview. I love the color.
