my mum gave me one of her white gold chains years ago and i can't remember which one it is. i have one white metal chain stamped with a star and then 1728 AR and in a different spot 50. I'm wondering if this is the white gold one

does the stamp mean anything to anyone?

Typically white gold chains will have the following stamps (but if the piece was bought abroad it may be different):

9k = the piece will be stamped with 375
14k = the piece will be stamped with 585
18k = the piece will be stamped with 750
22k = the piece will be stamped with 916

If it's gold it's like to have one of the numbers above. So I doubt that the chain you're looking at is the white gold one. If it's an old chain it may not be hallmarked. Have a look at the clasp to see if there's anything on there.
