Hi, one of my friends is researching Jewellery and could use help with her questionaire if you feel like it:

From Alaleh:
"Hello friends!
This is a questionnaire form of a thesis research on how people choose their jewellery. It would be great if you could help and complete it which will takes anywhere between 2 to 5 minutes of your time. It is completely anonymous and the result of your answers will be used for designing better jewellery pieces."

I answered all the questions, but many of those jewelry designs were so ugly was very hard to pick which I liked best, when I hated them all.

It was like being asked if I'd rather stab myself with a red-hot ice pick in the left eye, the right eye or in the genitals.

Sadly, I agree. A few of them were extraordinarily difficult to pick the best of styles that I didn't like at all.

That being said, I did finish the whole thing. :))

Finished it too, and agree on the choices.

Lol. I assumed the researchers had hashed together some key 'style elements' they were interested in measuring customer/ market taste for eg geometric vs organic etc.

Ugh! Seriously?

hahahahaha, I did this yesterday and felt the same sentiment! I went with thoughts like, "Well, this looks like it won't hurt as much when I accidentally toss my arm out for a stretch and hit SO in the face when sleeping.." so I have no idea what kinds of wrong information can be interpreted by the researcher friend.

Yup. I found it pretty easy to figure out what variables they were testing (geometric/organic, simple, complex, figurative/abstract, etc). But most design were hopelessly ugly. I would also think that many people's perception of, for example, drawn pave and a picture of real pave would be quite different.

I felt like I was all over the map with my answers except for the designs that looked like hearts. I hate heart jewelery.

interesting. Wonder what the scientific results will show --- that people like a wide variety of choices when selecting pieces? I had some that were more ornate and others that were more stream lined.

Will your friend be posting the results anywhere?

(and ... are those actual designs for real pieces??? hmmm.... )

I won't say they are ugly but I think you definitely need to appreciate it as a different design style. Since most ppl on PS lean towards classic timeless styles any of those would be an extremely hard sell.

Well said, Sarahbear!

I think that's the thing - on PS we do tend to be more classic/traditional/timeless and these styles were more contemporary and unique. But, there is always something for everyone, out there!

I am interested in seeing how the results will be interpreted - one question in particular (the one with the dolphin ring). To me, it seems pretty clear that it was testing if the person preferred realistic or abstract motifs (the first dolphin is very detailed and lifelike, the second is somewhat stylized and the last was an abstract design). However, dolphins are very much a personal preference and I wonder how that will be controlled to identify people who prefer abstract versus the ones who just plain dislike dolphins.

Yeah, you know I had a sterling silver dolphin ring when I was a little kid. Maybe it's just me, but I associate it with being a child. I'd never spend hundreds on any ring that has animal themes. Too cutsy.

My mechanic has dolphins on his wedding band; he and his wife are SCUBA enthusiasts/teachers and they have a real passion for it. I wouldn't choose it, but it means something to them. Just funny, cause I actually KNOW someone with a dolphin ring

But I agree....the offered choices seem too specific to gain any general consensus from. And none of them catered to my taste profile, so it was a difficult choice.

:)) The design of the dolphin in the quiz was really close to what my ring looked like or I probably wouldn't have associated it w/being a child. The thing is, I was thinking I wouldn't want animal jewelry, but then I remembered that the Roberto Coin animal/sealife pendants (like the seahorse) are something I'd wear now, so it's really all about how something is put together. You for sure could have a cool dolphin ring that works for an adult.

The quiz showed extremely statement-type pieces. In reality, I don't think I'd wear any of those. I like plain diamonds in basket settings! lol Maybe a plain band with dolphins etched into it and a nice diamond nestled into a bezel along with it. :cheeky:

I answered the survey too. I'm curious what the results will be. I have to agree with SarahBear though, our tastes on PS are more classic. I like the occasional unique design and I can appreciate modern-style jewelry as well, but I thought some of the examples were hideous. :knockout:

did it! I actually found it easier to answer the "word questions" than to select among the design examples.

oops - I meant to say I found it more difficult to answer the 'word questions" than to select among the examples - time to turn in!

Those designs are so awful, I didn't do the survey. If they don't give a "none of these" option, I get all worked up saying I like one ugly thing when they're all unappealing.

I did do the survey, but man, those design choices were pretty bad.

n/m

I don't think they're asking for feedback on designs per se, but on concepts...

traditional, vs. contemporary vs. "out there."
strictly functional only vs. functional with some decorative elements vs. ornate.
geometric vs. organic vs. frou-frou.
metal only vs. metal with some jewels vs. jewel-encrusted.
