I’ve got a large sapphire that needs a recut.

Is jerry stilll the best option? I feel like his prices are higher than they used to be but still seem reasonable.

I mention the size because of someone charges per ctw it would be up there.

I purchased a JXR amethyst from Chris Auletta that he had had recut by Dan Stair. Almost 3 years later, the jeweler who fabricated the pendant bale & mounting is still raving about what a terrific job Dan did.

Not sure about prices or wait times, but there have been a slew of drool-worthy recuts from Rex Guo lately.

Rex’s work is amazing but no idea regarding pricing.

I just used Daniel Stair for a recut and he did an awesome job. He’s really very nice and was upfront with my options. He’s also traightforward with pricing. I absolutely recommend him. :D

Dan Stair worked on a sapphire and spinel for me. Both needed a tweak. He was honest and very good. I also like Jerry Newman. He did a recut on a very sadly chipped ruby for my sister.

I feel like if I’m picking just anyone I really love top notch facetting - but I feel like I’m just telling “shut Up and take my money”

I highly recommend Jerry. I completely trust him. He's done several re-cuts and tweaks for me over the years and I've always been very happy.

I too love TNF but I don't believe he does re-cuts. I think he only cuts his own stones.

Idk the treatment but I’m hoping based on color not a lot. If so I’d like to loose as little ctw as possible
It’s 12.7x11.7x8.5. I would think it could get a little nip and tuck

Very cool ring! Jerry has tweaked 4 stones for me with great success. He has always tried to take the very minimal amount off of the stone for me.

My vote is for Jerry..... even though I've used Dan.

Kerry will definitely cut as minimal as possible? I might be thinking of someone else but I feel like he cuts for precision and I’ve had people say they felt like they lost too much ctw or diameter when it was done because he’s particular

In my case Jerry only added facets to the pavilion to close up the windows. Is that what you are wanting him to do, or a full recut? Weight loss always stinks, but I didn’t loose any face up size because he only cut the pavilion. I was able to pull the weight loss info from my old emails. Here are examples of the weight loss for you from the stones he tweaked for me. Spinel went from 2.33ct to 2.04ct., Tanzanite from 2.83ct to 2.5ct, Tsavorites from 1.44ct to 1.22ct and another from 1.25ct to 1.11ct.
It does seem like a lot of weight loss overall, but the windows are gone and the face up sizes are the same as they originally were. It’s a tough decision and there are always risk involved.
I wonder if your window would close up much by adding a basket to the setting under the stone?

The thing I love about working with Jerry is that he listens to what's important to you. If you don't want to lose much ct wt then tell him that. Of course most lapidaries will cut for precision when given the chance, but re-cuts are different: you need to help guide the conversation. Tell him what you're okay with, what you're not and what your ideal scenario is. And he'll come back with different options for you.

Jerry will cut to minimize face up loss from my experience. He has recut a couple for me. He’s upfront and even told me 2 of the stones I was considering weren’t that bad and shouldn’t be tweaked. All that he tweaked for me kept the same face up size after he was done. The key is having enough material to work with. A flat stone is generally a poor candidate.

I agree that regardless of who you pick, be upfront that minimal face up size loss is paramount in order for it to stay in the same setting. Sometimes just having a smaller window is enough of an improvement.

Mine seems pretty bulbous at the bottom hopefully that’s not a problem.

Also I’d like to see the ctw loose - depending on where it lands I’ll have to make a decision if I want to send it for a cert before or after it gets cut. Hopefully it’s ny like x.01cts

If getting a lab report, do it after the recut otherwise it’ll be considered null.

Obviously in terms of resale but my point is if ts a high ctw and minimal treatment that will be a determining factor if I WANT to recut it.

I see. I don’t do it with resale in mind but for my own peace of mind, which I’d rather do with the accurate ct wt after faceting.

What’s the approximate face up mm and depth (guesstimate in the setting)?

11.7x12.7x8.5

Depth seems reasonable. What I did with Jerry is to send an inquiry for quote with my questions, providing as much details as possible. You can decide how to proceed from there. He’ll tell you what’s possible and not possible before you even send it to him.
