We''ve been looking for a stone for my e-ring for the past 5 months, and I''ve finally made it to the top of Jeff White''s list for a pale blue sapphire, yay!

The stone he has for me is a good clarity blue-green montana stone (described as a riverworn pebble!), which he thinks will cut a 6.5-7.5 square cushion or asscher. He''s thinks the colour is similar to an unheated aquamarine, which I think I will just love.

However, I can''t decide between the asscher or cushion cut, and thought you might be able to help me make up my mind.

I plan to set this on a single pave band - kind of like a cross between a DanielK Rosebud Tiffany Novo I suppose, and will have the setting custom made. I really want something with lots of sparkle, and Jeff thinks a cushion would offer this, as well as facing up a little larger, and appearing a little lighter.

But then again, there is something just so elegant about a well cut asscher, and I know I''d appreciate the beauty and precision of Jeff''s cut every day.

So, Pricescopers - what would you suggest?

If you want something with a lot of sparkle, go for the cushion. Both cuts lend themselves well to an antique look, but if you are looking for a "novo" like ring, the cushion would be a closer cut.

Other than Jeff White''s, what kind of cuts to you prefer for stones in general? If you like step cuts, consider the asher, if you like brilliant cuts, consider the cushion. I say this because this will be your everyday ring so you want something that will keep you happy for years down the road and you want to have something you love.

They''re two completely diferent cuts and offer two diferent styles of jewellery. I''d start from your taste in general. Are you into contemporary things or more classical - not just jewellery, but wardrobe etc. If you''re into contemporary, an asscher would blend in more easily with it''s straight lines and clean looks. If you, however, prefer things looking safe and classic a cushion is the way to go, cause it reminds of old days of candlelight dinners and ballroom dances, and really looks timeless. An asscher also looks more "serious" (for the lack of a better word) and fashion-forward, while cushion to me looks more serene, peaceful and charming. Also, asschers look best when done in materials of great clarity, cause simple cuts make it easier to spot every little inclusion. So if the stone is not of excellent clarity I''d go for a cushion. And since you''ll use diamonds on the shank, they might be too sparkly for a step cut stone like asscher. So it''s your pick
