JCK Online: Former Robber Tells Jewelers How to Avoid Crime

Re: JCK Online: Former Robber Tells Jewelers How to Avoid Cr

Interesting read! I don't have a store, but even as a private person, I always try to be aware of what makes one a "target." Thanks for posting!

Wow--that was fascinating. If I owned a jewelry store the first thing I would do is put up a sign saying the video was being surveilled elsewhere. Seems like that alone would save a lot of potential issues.

Ahhh, another advantage of online buying...you totally avoid inadvertently being in a dangerous situation!

How can you tell if someone is casing your store?

If a guy comes in and says they are just looking, that is a sign. People don't just come into a jewelry store without a purpose. If they keep wanting to see bigger pieces, that might also be a sign.

LOL, I'm guilty of scouting out jewelry stores for robbing, then! Hahaha. I hope this doesn't make jewelers more apprehensive about the average bling lover who just wants to look and get inspiration for their next projects!!

GemFever: You're welcome! In addition to jewelry showrooms I found the comments relevant to other businesses. I'm mindful of pubs and convenience-store robbery reports where circumstances were similar...displays blocking windows, lack of cameras, not much traffic, etc.

DeeJay: You know, my home surveillance system records my inside entrances for a set-time after any door is opened and uploads it to a cloud. It occurs to me that my signage outside the house says nothing about video or offsite. I may amend that, just for home-security. Of course I'm in Texas where the robbers may assume we're inside cleaning our guns and watching the chili-cookoff channel, so signage may be superfluous (haha).

Hmm... Have you thought about a career in promo writing for online sellers? ;)

I'm right there with you. I regularly browse stores in different markets to experience different approaches, presentations, education, etc. Frequently I'll tell them I'm in the biz at the front of the exchange, but sometimes not... I may adjust my thinking on that one.

That's OK, I have no signage but The Demon Dog is lurking within. Anyone who can get in my house and take something without losing a leg deserves whatever he can get!

Man - I'm ALWAYS "just looking" - how else could I have ended up with 41 wedding bands??????

Re: JCK Online: Former Robber Tells Jewelers How to Avoid Cr

I also plead guilty to "just looking." But maybe I should wear something more upscale than jeans, a tee shirt, a bulky jacket, and running shoes!
