James Allen - how is their custom jewelry?

I found the perfect stone, and I''m going to get a qoute form jamesallen.com. I spoke with Jennifer today. So my question is: Since I can''t return the custom piece, how is the quality of their custom work?

honestly, there isn''t a lot of jamesallen custom rings around here. I''ve never seen one in person so i can''t comment on their workmanship. I would ask them about what type of policy they have in place in case you are unhappy with the final product. what type of setting are you thinking of having them make? maybe their is already a stock design that may still work in your budget with a way for you to see the ring so you know exactly what you are getting and what to expect.

My ering is a three stone pear that I had done custom through JA. I worked with Jim and Jennifer and it was pretty easy and I''m over the moon about my ring! I found some pictures online and did most of it over e-mail telling them how many prongs I wanted (only three on each stone, etc.). I can''t remember exactly how long it took but I think it was two weeks or so. I also got my shared prong eternity band done custom through JA and was so pleased that I got a diamond and emerald eternity done for my first anniversary.

My ering design and my eternity bands are classic and pretty straightforward. What kind of ring are you thinking of doing? Would it be more involved?

The ring I want is a combination of two designer styles, by Gelin Abaci and mostly Claude Thibeadeau. I LUV the profile of the CT La Royal collection, # 20 and #21 on their web-site (http://www.creationthibaudeau.com/) but with no diamonds, and with more geometric flat shank. And the prongs are from GA #203 but not as heavy since what I''m getting is not a tension setting. I''ll try to attach the pic if it works. I also have 4 princess cut stones from my old wedding band I''m going to be re-using in the new ring. Two on either side of the center diamond, and two bezel set in rose gold as "surprise" diamonds.

I''ve looked all over the internet and did not find anything close to it. I''m not concerned that I won''t like the desing, but the wroksmanship. I got one good comment, so I feel more reassured. And I definitely will talk to them about their policies.

Please post about your experiences with their rings, please, I''ll be checking here often.

Honestly, James Allen is one of the PS vendors who I can never recall having seen a custom ring from.

Engagement Rings Direct and Whiteflash are the two PS dealers I would go to right away if I wanted a custom piece. And as a matter of fact I just did (my new ring is from ERD).

I would totally go to another vendor, but they don''t have a diamond I like. I found a perfect one from JA. They promised to send me an idealscope on it on April 28 when their NY store opens after the Pass Over. I wish I could get it *yesterday*!

Do you think they might work especially hard to get the custom thing going? Wouldn''t it be nice?

I''ll keep posting here with the results, price quote, pictures, progress, etc.

You don''t have to get the ring where you bought the stone, just an fyi. I bought my stone somewhere else. i would ask for some quotes from Whiteflash, Leon Mege, and Engagement Rings Direct in addition to JA. Hope that helps

Hi there!

Those are my earring jackets. They sure are custom-mde, based on a LM design (sorry, Leon!

). I had a little problem with the quality of the craftmanship initially (JA "outsourced" the setting - I think that's the arrangement - to Danhov ), but Jim got the problem fixed (he was very gracious and accomodating about it). When I received the jackets, I was completely bowled (sp?) over. The melee are about the most sparkling I've ever seen, the centre stones are amazing and the craftmanship is very good (much better than my local jeweller's).

Thank you Phoenix, and everybody else who responded! It answers my question perfectly! When I talked to Jennifer from JA, she said they would send it some place but the craftsmanship will be top notch. I just wanted to do more research and get some feedback.

it depends on the vendor, some will cover the stone, others won''t. you can also purchase insurance through Jewelers Mutual that will cover the stone while it''s being set. another option is to puchase a cheap setting from JA, insure your ring with your insurance company, then have it reset into your custom setting, the reset woulf then be covered.
