Jade Bangle Sizing?

Hello! I have recently gone down the jade bangle rabbit hole and am wondering about sizing –

How small have you gone relative to your hand circumference measurements based on common size charts? My hand circumference measurement is 200mm, which puts me in the 56-58 (some say larger) size range for bangles, but realistically, have you been able to squeeze into smaller bangles or do you recommend staying within the suggested range?

Asking because there is a 56mm bangle that I am interested in but I am also averse to excessive pain soooo... decisions.

I can do anything from a 51 to a 58

Keep in mind the princess (fully cylindrical) bangles are less tight than the D shape

Is your hand flexible? I ask because my bestie is a screaming banshee with zero pain tolerance and zero hand flexibility so she was yelling and carrying on to no end when I tried to put a very loose 58 on her!

Oh, awesome, that is a wide range!

The one that I am considering is indeed a fully cylindrical bangle so this bodes well. I think with soap, I can maybe manage because I've had loosey goosey joints my whole life.

Your poor friend!! I can picture it now, haha. I hope that the bangle was very pretty on her and offset some of the pain.

Appreciate your help. Thanks! =)

We never got it on!!! She yelled so much that was the end of that. Her real sizing was like a 55 and with all the yelling there was no use trying to shove a 58 on! She has zero pain tolerance!

When we were little I used to chase her around with tweezers threatening to pluck her eyebrows and she’d run around screaming.

Ofc!!

As a newbie, I think I'll start off with a Guatemalan jade bangle as a casual entry into wearing bangles while searching for my ultimate dreamy lavender piece. I find myself drawn to the oceanic quality of some of the more translucent examples of Guatemalan jade – the color reminds me of the coastal waters here in CA. As for lavender jade, there are some gorgeous and captivating pieces but the price points require serious vetting and consideration.

I also have another question for the jade experts here:
I've noticed while shopping around that quality beaded pieces (translucent & vivid in color) command similar prices to substantial pieces such as bangles. Is this fairly standard?

I've always thought that beaded pieces were more of a secondary or aftermarket trade, but this seems to be contrary to the case with jade.

Thank you!!

Hahaha, you sound like a blast to hang with.

@Alybird is the bangle non-refundable?

If so, I’d highly recommend getting yourself a set of cheap bangles in various sizes so that you can try it on at home.

Personally, I like tighter bangles as they don’t bash around so much. But I have a range of bangles between 55 guifei (equivalent to 53 standard round) to 60.

It depends on each person’s hand flexibility and pain tolerance but typically:
- Hand circumference will give you a base size, mine is 54-55
- It’s recommended to buy something -1 to +2 in size for “standard round” D-type bangles. Fully cylindrical “round bar” bangles can be -2. Guifei oval bangles need to be +2/3 as the width is not enough
- If your hand is flexible, you can even go -2 to -3 (I can do this albeit my hand is bruised the day after, but smaller bangles are also cheaper!)

Before I bought any jade bangles, I got a range of circular bangles in size 52 to 58.

For reference:
Here are four of the most common bangle shapes
  • 1 - 贵妃镯 — Noble Consort Bangle (or Guifei Bangle), oval in shape, standard bangle width is 9-13mm. Sizing needs to be ~2mm bigger than your Standard Round
  • 2 - 正圈 — Standard Round, standard width is 9-13mm
  • 3 - 美人镯 — Beauty Bangle, smaller width at 7-9mm. Sizing can be 1mm smaller than Standard Round
  • 4 - 圆条 — Round Bar (referring to the fully rounded cross-section style), typically 9-11mm. Anything 12mm+ is called a chubby round bar. Sizing can be 1mm smaller than Standard Round

I go into buying oval guifei bangles in more detail here, as mine are guifei:

Wow, thank you for all of this in-depth info! This totally de-mystified some of the sizing confusion that I had and it makes sense that the shape of the bangle would impact both how it fits and how easy it is to get on.

Btw, I loveee the icy white bangle that you tried on in that thread! Thank you for linking it! Now I am going to go read the whole post and absorb all the info I can about jade. :mrgreen2:

The bangle that I am getting presently is returnable but with a restocking fee. I'm okay with this because I've decided to go with a Guatemalan jade bangle to start. It's much less than Burmese jade but one can be assured that it's jadeite and untreated because the material isn't commonly treated. I also happen to like the blue-green color properties!

For the lavender jade bangle that I am seeking, I know I'll need to be more scrutinizing and really know what it is that I am looking for before making the purchase. I've resigned to taking my time with this purchase and doing more research until I find the right one that really speaks to me! (I'm somewhat of the belief that when the time is right, the jade will find it's person.)

Thank you for your helpful response!

For the same quality, a bangle will be more expensive.

Beads may be cut from the same rough but they’re only cut when the material is not big enough for bangles or hololith rings.

They’re not necessarily a secondary thing though because some people prefer beads for their flexibility, but a bangle of the same quality (in a wearable size!) will be the top choice for cutters because they’ll get the most money out of it.

However, where you may see a beaded bracelet at the same price as a bangle of the same quality is if the bangle is either (1) really tiny, (2) the material is thin eg only 6-8mm thick, (3) the beads are big and juicy.

Sometimes when a jade bangle is broken beyond repair, it will be cut into beads.

In this pic you can see where beads are drawn onto the slab after a hololith ring has been cut. Note that the slab itself is the inner core/centre left over from cutting bangles

I recall someone who wears bangles a lot posting a video of how to put on small bangles using a plastic bag and lots of soap. She said she can get very small bangles on that way! I’m sure google can find similar videos.

Ohhh wow, this is fascinating! It's so cool to see the process of how jade jewelry is made. I have a newfound appreciation for it now and I admire the waste-not approach.
