JA hand made 6 prong knife edge vs. WF legato sleek line

Where are you getting the diamond from? I would prefer to use the same vendor.

If that's not a concern, I prefer the knife edge. The band on the legato looks a little bit too "flat" for my taste. I like something with more of an edge (not necessarily knife edge though). Have you looked at the Whiteflash Vatche settings? They have some nice solitaire settings.

Yikes tough call! I've had a couple of settings from JA and I've had good luck with both, however, I've never seen a handmade piece from JA before, this must be new! I do know that several Psers have the Legato and it's beautiful and they seem very pleased!

Are you leaning one way of the other? Thats quite a rock you're going to be sporting!!

I am getting the diamond from JA. I like the "loopiness" of the legato's head.... however I like the classic look of the JA. Really torn between the 2.

I much prefer the legato, the lines are more proportional to my eyes... there is a definite advantage to keeping the entire purchase in the family though, so if you're really on the fence that's definitely something to consider...

3ct J what, exactly? RB? In any case a 3ct is going to show some body colour from the side, no way around that, and it's not going to look like a colourless stone face-up either.

Have you considered leaving the white gold free of rhodium plating so stone and metal match better in colour? it can vary depending on what alloy we're talking about... but it's always just a bit creamier and warmer than rhodium. I have a number of unplated wg pieces, as do other PSers - it's my favourite metal. Try a google search for "pricescope" and unplated white gold if you'd like more info/pics ::)

Thanks for your advice ...

What is the benefit of keeping it all under one house? Warranty....

I contacted WF and they said since the stone was not source through them it would be a 150 dollar setting fee???

I call that BS :)

Liability. If the vendor sells you both stone and setting they will take responsibility for the safety of the stone and the setting during the setting process. If you buy from different vendors you'll need to get the loose stone insured for setting (in case something unfortunate happens the vendor doing the setting will not take responsibility for an outside stone). Jeweler's Mutual will insure the loose stone for shipping and setting, you'll have to get it appraised though.

Normal. Most vendors charge to set outside stones.

you will get charged from other vendor if you didn't get the diamond from them.

I am thinking that the 6 prongs would cover more of the sides, so I'd probably go with the JA setting. The complication of not buying a setting there is that whoever sets your stone is probably not going to take responsibility for any damage incurred while setting. If it were not for that advantage, I would recommend the setting I have instead, the Vatche U-113, because it is possibly the best available Tiffany reproduction setting. I just don't recall seeing examples of the JA one here.

Definitely prefer the Legato. I will almost invariably pick 4 prongs over 6 (just my personal preference), and I like the details in the head as well as the taper of the shank.

For a 3 carat, definitely the JA 6 prong!! It will look so elegant.

Also, I agree with OCgirl who mentioned the Legato band looks a little flat. That's why I'm not crazy about it.

Much easier to get the setting and diamond both from JA! Good luck.

When you guys say it looks "flat" do you mean that it looks like its set low?

+1 to jstarfireb.

I love the scallop or slight dip of the head on the legato as well. I don't find the Legato looks flat...

Not sure how to explain it. The band itself looks like a "comfort fit" band whereas some rings have a knife edge or less defined knife edge or rounded band, which to me looks more feminine or fluid. The band on the Legato looks like a rounded... rectanglular cube to me at a certain cross-section. I think reducing the band width will most likely help. Sorry if my explanation sucks.

It's more of a flat edge band, instead of a rounded, more dimensional band. Does that make sense, BS?

Also, 6 prongs are more secure, and with a 3 carat, I'd definitely want that baby protected!

I much prefer the JA ring. Just not a fan of the Legato, I don't like the taper up to the head. I also prefer the 6 prongs of the JA ring.
