So I am looking at a diamond in the 1.6-1.8 ct range. In order to fit my price range, I will likely have to go to a J color. Considering that, should I look for a none, faint, or medium fluorescence. I have read a couple of places that states that with a diamond that is not colorless, some fluorescence may actually make the diamond look whiter. I do not want to compromise on the brilliance of the diamond. If prices are the same for those fluorescence, which one should I choose? Any thoughts?

Medium or strong blue fluorescence may make a J look whiter, or it may not affect it at all. Fluor is in the UV range, and can spill over to the visible light spectrum, or it may not. It all depends on the individual diamond.

All things equal, if there is medium or better fluor, and you are not paying a premium for it, I'd pick a diamond with fluor. It can be a cool effect, but realize that it isn't seen most of the time.

I would probably only buy J color in a round if it had medium to strong blue fluorescence. But I like whiter diamonds, so that would be my bias.

A diamond that large will also tend to concentrate the color. I'd pick the mb or sb fluor. I'd also evaluate that diamond against yellow gold or rose gold as well as the whiter metals, to see if perhaps the colored gold is more flattering to it.

As long as its an Ideal cut I think a J will look white. An excellent cut J looks amazing with or without flourenscence. Faint or medium flouro is a Plus! But I would take it without flouro as well.

I love fluorescence and would want to be certain that there is no milkiness or oiliness evident when you look at it with the naked eye, so ask about that first. If no milkiness or oiliness is present, then I wouldn't really put restrictions on the amount of fluoro in the stone, but if a med blue/SB was available... I'd snap it up!!

Good luck in your search!
