It started with my mom, and then yesterday my brother came down with it. At about 3am this morning I suddenly woke up with a very nasty feeling in my tummy. A few hours later I threw up. I really wish I could go back to sleep and sleep it off ... but the nausea is keeping me awake. I just took two benadryl in an effort to put me to sleep, and I've also heard that it's sometimes used as an anti nausea.

Any tips? I've only thrown up twice (about 2 hours apart) and I don't think more is coming --- my stomach should be pretty empty now. Sorry if that is TMI! Are there any remedies that you all use when you have the stomach bug?

Ugh this is the worst kind of sick.

I was going to post about the same thing, so I''m glad you started this thread. I''m sorry you have this stomach virus too lilylover. It seems to be going around. I woke up with it last Friday morning. Thankfully, the throwing up portion only lasted for one day, but the nausea continues. For three days I felt so sick and weak that I was shaking. I slept on and off all day. All I took in was ginger ale, 7-Up and dry crackers every now and then. I''m getting my strength back slowly (though I''m still a little wobbly) but the nausea remains. I was hoping that maybe one of the Moms would have some suggestions for recovering from this. Doctors won''t prescribe anything for this because it''s viral, but it''s so hard to hang in waiting to feel better.

gemgirl -- so sorry to hear that you are sick as well! It really is awful. I am praying my benadryl will kick in any minute and I can sleep the rest of the day. Thankfully, the trend with my family is the virus only lasts about a day.

If you stay sick much longer I would call the doctor back. There''s got to be something he can give you for the nausea.

I HATE stomach viruses - that''s the worst kind of thing I can get sick with. It just totally incapacitates me for days - I hate being nauseous and throwing up. The only thing that has ever worked for me is drinking some ginger ale and eating very lightly toasted bread. Sometimes drinking tea if I feel up for it - very small sips at a time. I think it''s important to stay hydrated, so usually I try my best to at least drink the ginger ale and tea or plain hot water.

I once tried some kind of nausea remedy from the drugstore, but I can''t remember what it was called. It was a cherry flavor I think, and it was VERY sweet liquid. I thought it would make me feel a lot worse, but it actually seemed to work (but truthfully, it''s possible I had just been getting better already at the point when I finally agreed to try it, so who knows if it was the virus going away or the "medicine" working?)

I hope you two feel better soon, lilylover and gemgirl!!!

*hugs* i had some awful GI virus two weeks ago. I didn''t throw up, but had absolutely terrible stomach pains that went in waves and i was so weak. It lasted about 5-6 days. I didn''t take any meds b/c i am pregnant, but i made tons of ginger ale slushies and those calmed my stomach.
Pour ginger ale into cups, put in freezer for couple hours until mostly frozen and then chop it up. Something about the cold helped me a lot.

Ugh, I had this over the weekend. I was completely and utterly miserable. Unfortunately, mine was of the variety that didn't involve just throwing up, and even a sip of water sent me to the bathroom for one reason or other during the first 8-10 hours of it. I had some Pepto Bismol at some point during that, and more once I could keep it in. I also had a few table water crackers, room-temp water, and weak decaf tea toward the end of the first day. I couldn't handle anything else until the next day. I also couldn't move once the sickness subsided - my body hurt sooo badly. Watching TV literally took too much energy, all I could do was sleep. The next day I felt better but delicate and stuck with bland, soft foods. By the end of the day, I felt like I'd been run over by a truck, though. Finally back to relative normality today. I hope you get better much more quickly!

So sorry, I hate the stomach bug. Once I had it soooooo badly I slept next to the toilet.

I can only say what works for me. Everyone is different. Gingerale... Just a small amount. If that stays down then, I will have a saltine.
Rinse and repeat.

Some people do well with Coke. Regular coke, not diet.

Pepto Bismol did nothing for me, but it could be great for you??

Then once you are able to stomach the crackers and the gingerale. I like having a cup of plain ole chicken broth, nice and hot.

You could also try some toast...

I hope all of you feel better soon. I know how it is, just awful!!!!!

This IS the worst kind of sick, and I''m frightened that it''s going around. Hydration and rest is key. Whatever you can drink, drink it.

I hope you feel better REAL soon

Lily and Gemgirl -- I hope you two feel better soon! I have a habit of passing out instead of throwing up, which isn''t fun either. What seems to help when I''m nauseous is to drink ginger ale (I prefer diet raspberry or cranberry) and as much water as possible without getting that really full feeling. If I can handle it, I also have chicken broth and some sort of light cracker, plain. When I can manage solids, I usually make or buy red Jello (I don''t think the color has anything to do with it, but that''s the kind I like best). Aside from that, I just try to get as much sleep/rest as possible. I wish I had other advice for you. It stinks to have the flu!

Thank you all so much for your tips. The benadryl that I took helped me sleep. I just woke up about 2 hours ago. I feel a little better! My stomach still feels very fragile, and I am pretty weak. I managed to eat two saltine crackers and drank a little bit of room temperature sprite.

Praying that things only get better from here out.

Gemgirl -- how are you feeling?

I''m doing a little bit better every day. I had the weakness too. It felt very weird to be so shakey and have jelly legs. I ate nothing but some crackers, gingerale and tea for the first three days, then I attempted chicken broth and it was OK. Keep sipping soda and taking a bite of cracker as often as you can, but don''t push for food until you''re ready. Yesterday was day 6 and I had my first regular meal.

Once the weather warms up even alittle bit, all of these viruses will start to die off and less people will be sick and spreading their germs.

Glad you''re feeling better. I am late to the party, but was going to say ginger ale, regular coke, and saltines. Sprite and I don''t get along when my tummy hurts.

Something serious is definitely going around. My grandfather passed away suddenly two weeks ago--heart attack and then intense sickness for hours--and the next morning his second caretaker came down with a stomach bug--and then my uncle--and then my mom when she got in town, and then me, then my dad, then my cousin, then my husband, then one of the 911 responders, then my aunt. Yeah. Turns out the weekend caretaker showed up at the house with a stomach flu, passed it to my grandfather who was too weak to endure it, and then it spread like wildfire. The house/car were disinfected THREE times, we used rubber gloves to clean, did about 30 loads of laundry, etc. and yet all of us got sick within three days. We all agreed it was the most sick we''d ever felt. Chills, shaking, weakness, nausea, etc. I''ll spare you the worst details. Just goes to show no matter what precautions you take that some viruses will not take NO for an answer.

Hoping you continue on the up curve!
