Hi!

Thank you for your replies to my first post. Last weekend, I brought the ring that I discussed to a local jewelry store and was told that it held an Old Mine Cut diamond, not an Old European Cut diamond. However, today I had the ring formally appraised (including the attached photo). The appraiser was most helpful, and I so much appreciate her insights into the history of this ring. Following is her description of the ring.

"One ladies diamond and platinum (stamped) ring circa 1950''s. In the center in a four prong setting is (1) round old European cut diamond measuring 6.5 x 3.85mm and weighing approx. 1.04 carats (by formula). It has approx SI-1 clarity (small chip on girdle and medium sized chip on pavillion) and J color with fair cut and polish. Accenting the center diamond in the bowtie design are (6) straight cut baguette diamonds having VS clarity and G-H color with a total weight of approx. 0.42 carats. Bead set on the top and bottom are (8) round full cut diamonds having VS clarity and G-H color with a total weight of approx 0.28 carats. The ring has a total combined diamond weight of approx. 1.74 carats. The mounting is hand made of bright polished platinum with a 2mm wide half round shank. There is a metal ring sizer installed in the shank. 5.6g.

I realize that the setting and the accenting diamonds are from the 1950''s. My question is whether it is possible that the center old European cut diamond could possibly have first been cut for a ring in the early 1860''s. Perhaps this diamond has been recut to as it now appears (Do some old European cut diamonds date that far back?)- or is it not possible that the diamond is from this time period.

If any of you have any additional knowledge, I would be most grateful for your comments. My real interest is in the particular history of the center diamond.

Thank you very much.

Your photo isn't attaching. The Old European cut ran from 1870s through the 1930s, according to some sources. The early OECs resembled the Old Mine Cuts (OMC) in that they have large open culet, small table, and high crown, like the OMC. The difference is that OMC was square-ish and OEC was definitely round or nearly so. Maybe your OEC is an early one? (edit: Yours has 59% depth so I'd predict it's a more modern OEC)

I have an early OEC 3-stone ring and it has the more haphazardly cut early OECs. I also have a later OEC and it is much closer to modern RB in proportions. It is more symmetrical and has larger table, bigger spread, much thinner girdle, and shallower depth than the old OECs. My small town jewelers told me the old 3-stone ring has OMCs, but two independent appraisers agree that they are Old European Cuts.

My OEC 3-stone with older OEC cut. Tthe ring that positively was made for bright sunlight. No dark diamonds here, LOL. See how these have chunky big faceting and big open culets like an OMC.

Also look at some of these in this thread of antique cuts:
OMC & OEC

link to other antique cut threads Widget posted a pretty darn round OMC in there. Maybe even the appraisers have to flip a coin to decide sometimes.
