Is USPS Registered Mail really this slow?

I had a package shipped on the 11th in California to me, in Montreal. The last tracking update is on the 12th where it said it was processed at LA international sort center. Since then, I haven't had any news. Not a single tracking update, either on USPS website or Canadapost website.

Any idea if it's really just this slow, or the package could be lost? I had other packages coming from USA (using regular first class, not registered) that came to me in about 4 business days, so this is a long time...

I've read Registered Mail can be slow, but is it really this slow, when could it possibly show up?

USPS website does not really provide real time tracking. from the time an item arrives at its origin station to the time it gets to destination station there are not usually updates along the way. They may appear after the fact, but I would not rely on them to keep me up to the minute. While the eleventh was eleven days ago, Registered is not Priority mail, and with the severely freaky weather there has been in that time all the way from L A to Montreal it could be delayed. I have something coming from London to New York nearly four weeks now. I look for it every day, but am not yet alarmed. Plus there is the international aspect to your order.

VL is right. I wrote this in another post:

I sold something to another PSer, and paid for Priority shipping. LIttle did I know that when you're tracking it, it goes from:

At post office
Sent to post office sorting facility
.
.
.
At facility near destination
On truck to be delivered
Delivered

That space in the middle took 5 days because of weather!!!

Mine was sent USPS Priority + Registered mail, and there was no "real" tracking in the middle of the journey.

You can't file a claim till 15 days.
I'm always pleasantly surprised if it gets there in 14.

Their tracking is a joke.

Sometimes it takes a long time. I've recently sent a priority mail to CA from NY and was shocked to see how the tracking information never got updated. Give it a week or a little more time.

You still have time and I'm another who will tell you the tracking is laughable. Also for future reference there's no point sending it out as priority and it will go just as slow as first class mail. Registered is slow no matter what you do. Do yourself a favor and just sign up for email/text alerts on the package.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm glad it really is just slow and most likely not lost or stolen.

Hi,

My niece in London just informed us she got our Christmas card, mailed Dec 5, on Feb 20th, I just lost a pck , my first, late last yr.
Gone, Gone Gone.

I used Registered Mail ONCE. When enough time had passed, I started to get nervous and called our Post Office. I was told that Registered Mail is the safest possible way to go. It is put in a separate cage. Only certain people have a key to it. Everyone who touches it has to sign their name. It goes from location to location - cage to cage. In smaller hubs, it only moves once or twice a day. She told me that mail that would ordinarily take 3 days can take up to 3 weeks. It only updates when you drop it off and when it reaches its designation.

How much time did it take for your package to arrive?

Whenever I send or receive gems from Thailand, it takes about 10 business days. Tracking usually updates within 5 hours or so?

one time my package took like 15 days from Montana to Ca... :o

Recently I had a stressful experience with sending a package by USPS priority registered mail from CA to New York. It was mailed on 2/10/14 and did not arrive until 2/19/14. The holiday and bad weather didn't help. The update is a joke. It showed received on 2/10/14, dispatched to San Francisco on 2/11/14, left SF on 2/12/14. Then nothing until after delivery on 2/19/14. I signed up for email update, but didn't get it until several hours after the package has been delivered. Registered mail is the only way to send a high value package with insurance, but it is surely slow. Adding priority is useless because it is handled just like regular registered mail and does not go any faster.

Right, Registered does not provide tracking. It documents the drop off of the package and the delivery of the package. I wouldn't worry until after two weeks.

Art Nouveau, in your case, there was probably a lot of bad weather between CA and NY in Feb. It has been a pretty severe winter in the east and northeast.

OP, I cannot remember exactly how long it took, but it approached the 3 week mark. I was told that is smaller areas (I live in Rhode Island) Registered Mail only comes in and is checked once a day, so that might have slowed it down in my case.

I wonder if there is no tracking due to a security reason. Outsiders do not know where it is at any given point. In any case, imo that service has become archaeic (sp) in today's age.

right now I'd imagine weather issues on the East Coast have made things "difficult".

After 14 days my package is finally at my local post office, it's going to be delivered today.

I just had my first Registered Mail experience - after all the stories I was prepared for the worst, but looks like I got lucky. Shipped it out Friday evening and just got an email from BGD that they received it. Today is Tuesday, so definitely not bad for MA to TX.
