Good day, everyone...I found an IGI (New York: 4/27/01) certified stone that I liked and put a deposit on it a few weeks ago. I told the jeweler that I wanted the stone put in a platinum setting with trillion cut side stones (preferably 30-35 points on each side). He told me the ring would be ready during the first week of September. Since then, I''ve continued my research, including reviewing the daily contents of this website (which have been extremely helpful). During this time, I''ve learned that there are a wide range of opinions concerning the ratings of stones that have been certified by IGI gemologists. According to the IGI (New York) certification, the specifications of the stone that I put a deposit on are as follows:

Square (Princess) Moderate Brillant Cut: 1.57 Carat
"F" Color
VVS2
6.46 x 6.45 x 4.46
Depth: 69.1%
Diameter: 78.0%
Crown: ---
Pavillion: ---
Culet: None
Girdle: Medium to Very Thick
Polish/Symmetry: Good/Good
Flourescence: Moderate Blue
Price: $8,500

When I asked the jeweler(who appears trustworthy and whose business appears to have a satisfied clientele) about the accuracy of IGI''s ratings, he assured me that I was getting the quality of stone that I was paying for. He even suggested that I bring the stone to an independent appraiser (possibly from GIA) and see what they say (if it will help to calm my fears!). If I am not satisfied at that point, he will allow me to bring the IGI stone back and replace it with another stone of my choice.

Can anyone give me any feedback or comments on my situation? Thank you in advance for your concern.

I wouldn't place much faith in IGI. Take the LOOSE stone to an qualified INDEPENDENT appraiser who does not work directly for a jeweler. Or you could have the seller send the stone to AGS or GIA but he'd probably charge you for their fee. Then you'd have a much better grading report in the sense that it is probably closer to reality and is surely more respected in the business.

In your situation, I'd pay the fee in either case if he agrees to adjust the price to the new grading assuming you still want the stone.

Thank you for your reply...however, what should I do if the stone has already been placed in the setting? I'm actually supposed to pick it up on Thursday. Can I still bring it to an INDEPENDENT GIA appraiser who can generate a report?

Second, do you have any opinion as to the quality of the stone vis-a-vis its specifications?

Thanks again!

Hi - I can't comment on the cut quality or the price of the stone as I only know Round Brill.

If your jeweler is o.k. with getting the stone independently appraised, do so for your piece of mind. Med. Fluor could throw off the color grade, especially if set. I have read people being unsatisfied w/ IGI; but, Costco sells IGI stones that have checked out w/ one of my friends (by In.Appraisal)

The color & clarity sound very good on the stone. The fluorescence should discount the stone slightly in an F Stone. Make sure you see the stone in various lights to make sure the stone does not appear "oily" or that it is not to your liking.

Good luck.
