I was lookind at a stone which is listed as a "modified rectangular brilliant" Is this technically not a princess? How does that affect value?

Here are the specs:

1.04 Ct
G color
VVS2
$6350 in a platunum setting.

Sound like a good deal?

Rectangular modified brilliant is mostly likely a princess cut - but it's a rectangular-esque princess. A square princess is referred to as a Square Modified Brilliant. Generally speaking, more people look for a square princess than a more rectangular one - do you have the L/W ratio?

With just those specs to go on, it's not enough to determine if you've gotten a good cut... putting in G VVS2 1.02-1.04, there were several stones less expensive than yours but not by a whole lot...

What's most important is that you luv the look of your stone

Here are some more details from memory...

depth 71%
table 71%
culet none

I don't remember the exact dimensions but the length and width were within about 0.2mm. It basically looks square to the naked eye.

According to the GIA cert there is a small chip right on one corner. I could not find it with a loupe. Should I worry about this in terms of possibly being a weak point and possibly becoming worse or cracking?

Is the stone fiery? With T/D at 71, chances are the crown's pretty flat - it may be a brilliant but less fiery stone.

Did it say the chip was on the girdle? Princess cuts are more challenging for a jeweler to set (the corners are prone to chipping, esp if the girdle is v thin). If the chip is on the girdle, you may have trouble getting an insurance company to cover your stone/ring &/or finding a jeweler that will agree to set it...

The pointy corners are the most fragile points of a princess cut. It does not help if the stone has a thin girdle. By rule of thumb, "very thin" on the cert does not sound great. The small chip is not necesarily a sign of future issues, IMO. You can always ask an appraiser for advice.

How is the stone set? Some larger V-prongs could well be hiding the chip.

"regctangular modified brilliant" could be any, well, rectanguar diamondthat does not have step (=straight) facets: radiants, cushions, princesses qualify all. If the stone has a fine cut, the trade name has little to do with it's value, as far as I know.
