The GIA report says:

dimensions: 6.27 x 6.33 x 3.95
weight: 1 carat
Depth: 62.7%
Table: 57%
Girdle: Thick to very thick, faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Very good
Symmetry: Good
Clarity: VS2
Color: H
Fluorescence: None

Is this a good stone? Are the proportions right? What would the overall "cut" grade for this stone be? Are the angles and dimensions good? Overall, is $4640 a good price for it?

Should I be concerned about the girdle thickness? I know it makes the stone look smaller, but how small? Like a .95ct? Also, I read that there would be light loss and girdle would affect the color... is that right?

Thanks in advance! I am proposing with this in 5 days...

Some additional info: The GIA report also says "Comments: Surface graining is not shown"...

Also, this is set in a platinum 6 prong setting...

Thanks!

Is this a "good" stone depends on your personal definition of good. Are you looking for a top-cut stone, or are you looking a bit further down the cut scale? Also, you didn't really provide enough information to assess light performance - you need crown/pav angles to determine that.

Having said that, if you are looking for a stone with the best cut proportions, this probably isn't it. It's a bit small (yes, it looks more like a .95 or so), and the girdle isn't optimal. Also, the symmetry is only rated "good".

If you aren't looking for "super-duper" best cut available, then this might fit the bill.

I'd say this to you: I ran a search on 1.00 ct., H, VS2 stones, and the price for an exceptionally cut stone is $6000 online; likely a great deal more in the B&M world. The fact that this stone is SO much lower makes me wonder why....and I'd suspect it's because the stone doesn't perform very well.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I want to make sure there arent any glaring issues with it (for the price etc.)...

What is B&M?

The depth/table % values looked good, are they an ingredient for good light performance? Are they good? How do I calculate the angles? They are not noted on the GIA report.

I wanted a stone that looks great to our uneducated eyes. I visited Tiffany's and looked at a ton of diamonds, I can't see the color in H unless I put a D right next to it (I could see yellowishness in "I"). They had a ton of good symmetry good cut stones that looked great to me...

I dont know what significance "surface graining not shown" has...

something like this WF 1.01ct H SI1 might be a bit more compelling...? it's got right measurements for a 1ct stone (approx 6.5 mms) a great idealscope shot & a .7 HCA score. It's $5182 before the PS discount...

Wow alexah, that looks gorgeous! No light leakage at all!!!

sanfrahn - If you can spare the time, I'd suggest you look around a bit more. "Good" symmetry and polish isn't really that great. But for me, the main issue with the stone you posted is that it won't look like a 1ct stone... it will look noticeably smaller. As for the rest of your questions, it comes down to what your priorities are. And the crown and pavilion angles are not provided on the GIA report. Ask the jeweler if they can run a Sarin report for you (the stone has to be unmounted) -that will give you the dimensions.

For 1ct H diamonds in the VS and SI range, I like these

:

1.03ct H SI1

1.03 H VS2
