Hello, I''d love to get peoples'' opinion on this stone:

Round brilliant
Measurements: 8.68 x 8.72 x 5.42mm
Weight: 2.5 carats
Depth: 62.3%
Table: 58%
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Good
Symmetry: very good
Clarity: VS2
Color: H
Fluorescence: None

They''re asking $26,000. I''ve looked on BlueNile and Diamond.com and comparable diamonds seem to be running a few thousand more. Does this price seem right?

Thanks very much!

Who is the cert by?
Have any more info like the crown and pavilion angles?
Ideal-scope image?

It''s a GIA cert. I''m afraid those are all the stats I have on it at the moment. What other measurements should I be asking for?

The price seems reasonable. The stone is a bit on the deep side. As a result, the stone won''t face up quite as large as it should for its carat weight, so you''re paying for the weight of a 2.5 without getting the diameter of one. The table is on the large side as well. For that same amount of money (or less), I would be inclined to go for a slightly smaller stone with better specs (i.e. ideal cut).

It''s definitely on the deep side. More so than I like, but we need more info to make a good judgement. Please get us the crown and pavillion angles, also if possible get us an idealscope image. We ask a lot here, but it''s only for your benefit. Have you seen this stone???

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help! Yes, I have seen this stone... it looked very nice to me, but I''m certainly no expert. I''m looking for a stone for an engagement ring for my girlfriend and have been to a few places and I think I''m starting to be able to distinguish stones better, but there''s still more to learn.

I''ll contact the store and ask if they have the additional measurements. Thanks again!

if you can get a 3-D sarin scan, that would be great .

also, could anyone suggest how to find a reliable, independent appraiser in the Boston area? I''m new to this whole process (hopefully will only go through it once!) and what I was thinking was that when I found a stone I thought i''d be happy with, I''d have the store send it to an appraiser and have the appraiser give his opinion before finalizing the sale. Does this seem like a reasonable way to move forward? How can I find a good appraiser, and how much does it normally cost for the appraisal?

thanks again, I really appreciate how helpful everyone on this forum has been!

You can go through a list of reputable appraisers here on pricescope.. You can find it right here http://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx

Yes, it is a reasonable way to move forward, and the only way I would move forward without more info. For an appraiser in your area, go to the top of the PS page and click on resources and then click on appraisers. They should have someone in your area. BTW, you don''t necessarily have to go local with an appraiser if you don''t want to. There are quite a few appraisers here that I would be comfortable hearing their opinion without me having to be there. As far as price, sometimes it''s by the hour, and I think sometimes it depends on the ct. weight of the stone. It depends on the appraiser, so be sure and ask them when you make contact.

OK, I have the additional measurements:

Crown angle: 34 degrees
Pavilion angle: 42 degrees

Any thoughts on the diamond with these additional measurements? I''m going to take a look at it again tomorrow.

The diamond scored a 6.4, with 0-8 being the range and 1 is typically considered ideal. I would say pass. If you are going to spend the money for a large diamond you want it to perform much better then that.

Would someone please explain why this is too deep. Isn''t it within the 62% range?

So appreciated!

Pavilion and crown angles usually have a decimal after them -- your angles make me think the jeweler made them up or rounded up or down, and when a few tenths of a degree make a big difference, that makes it difficult for us to judge the stone.

The pavilion angle is your problem, not the overall depth.

Well, he says he''s checking with GIA to get the dimensions. His contact there said that he thought these were the angles but he''s checking to make sure.

OK, so I''ve found another stone that I''m considering. Could you please give me your opinion on the characteristics and the price?

Round Brilliant
Weight: 3.09ct
Depth 62.5%
Table 60%
Crown 14.4%
Pavilion 42.6%
Girdle: medium to thick faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
clarity: SI1
Color: H
Fluoresence: None

The asking price is $28,700. I''ve seen the stone and it looks very nice. There are a lot of inclusions, but they are quite small and not at all noticeable except under 10x magnification. Does this price seem reasonable?

By the way, it is an EGL-USA cert.

Maronis,

This second option seems particularly interesting, I think. It''s a distinctive FIC, with percent info captured. You''ve got I think 2 good appraisers in your area, Jeff Averbrook and Marty Haske, consider interviewing them both, and showing it to one of them. As you can read here, EGL USA is pretty good, and although I couldn''t find a single match on qualities for comprables, I''ll bet a G SI2 is not far off from being close, and on this board, they''ll start at $29,992 and go to $33,024.

Let us know about this one!
