Is this a good price for a 1.5+2+1.5 configuration?

Hello. I have to admit that I have been lurking around here for a while prior to today and am amazed at what experts most of you are. Over the past weekend I have become a step closer to buying a ring for my girlfriend. She originally wanted a three stone (.75+1.5+.75) with platinum setting until she saw a bigger version (arrrggghhh!) on Sunday which was:

1+2+1 configuration, round diamonds (4ctw)

H color, VS1 clarity

Platinum setting

Price quoted: $29,600

On the main facet of the 2 ct. stone were two light .75 mm linear scratches, visualized with the naked eye. It wouldn''t be noticible to anyone if they weren''t looking at it hard (My eyesight is 20:40, so I might pick up things a bit more easy). It certainly is beautiful, but I can''t get my girlfriend reinterested in the smaller arrangement, even though the bigger set looks a little out of proportion with her longer, thinner fingers. I have been quoted 40-47,000 for the same 2+4+2 config at the store''s other branches, but with better quality stones. I was only planning to spend under $20k, but now it seems that my gf would be unhappy with anything less. Can anyone please tell me if I should find better quality stones for the same $29,600 price, and which stores I might start looking at? I would be greatly appreciative.

Regards,

Kurt

Seems to me that you shouldn''t be seeing anything with the naked eye in a VS1 clarity.

What kind of cut/finish quality are you looking at?...i.e., table/depth/polish/symmetry/crown/pavilion/girdle #''s and grades.

Which lab. graded the stones?

More info will get you more detailed replies.

From what you say.... that stone may have been VS1 before it got scratched, and this may have well happened after it had been graded (during setting, let's say).

If the quote is based on the VS1 grade but now the stone is SI1... well, clear enough.

One more thing: the tytle of the post mentione 1.5-2.1.5 (5cts total) and the message body talks about the center stone is a 4 carat ring (1-2-1) being scractched. Which is the correct version ?

The total price does not sound all that bad for the grades. How about cut? Are the three stones certified ? All this does make a difference.

If the sides were about 0.9cts (probably the same size as the current stones given cut details) and the center 1.9 cts - all H/VS2, the total price might approach 20k intead of 30. The size and look of the ring should not be affected. The "price jump" at 1 ans 2 carat "steps" is allot more significant than the last tenth of a milimeter of diamond diameter. For clarity, VS2 is still super safe.

Hello Gary and Ana. Thank you very much for your replies:) I''m very sorry I havent replied in a while. I don''t have internet access and use my friend''s computer.

I will determine the cut and other parameters you spoke about. I am obviously a neophyte here!!
