I need your help PS nation. Trying to buy an engagement ring and came across this round diamond. Do you think this is a good diamond? How about for the price of $8,853?

Heres the GIA info:

Measurements: 6.46 - 6.51 x 3.84 mm
Carat Weight: 1.00
Color: D
Clarity: VS2
Cut Grade: Very Good
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Flourescence: None
Depth: 59.3%
Table: 58%
Crown Angle: 31.5
Pavilion Angle: 40.4
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick
Cutlet: Small
Star Length: 50%
Lower Half: 75%

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hi rock_tman9,

I just ran your diamond through the HCA tool and got a score of 1.7. You should aim for under 2, so this is a good start.

I'm a diamond newbie and only bought my first diamond yesterday, but I thought I would share my thoughts (opinions) with you anyway.

A couple of things:
  • Carat: You'll probably pay more for exactly 1 carat. Round numbers will always fetch higher prices. I would aim for slightly above or below.
  • Color: D is cream of the crop, but most people won't notice the difference between a D and an F. It's unlikely your fiancée will be comparing her diamond with a D. Save some money and go for a slightly lower color.
  • Cut: Personally, I would aim for an Excellent / Ideal cut. I actually place cut above all of the other C's. A well cut diamond will face up whiter and return more light (sparkle).

I would take a look at these as alternatives:

Hope this helps,

Please stick with excellent cut. You want to aim for close to 34-35 on the crown angle. I wouldn't buy one with 31.5. You can do a lot better than that one. Girdle should be thin, medium, or slightly thick. You'll narrow things down to better stones if you limit the search to GIA Excellent cut.

excellent input. Look at GIA excellent cut stones scoring 2 or below on the HCA.

Thank you for your responses. They helped me avoid a potential disappointment.
