Is the window in this sapphire acceptable to you?

I picked up my new sapphire ring today. But I can’t help to notice the tiny window on the stone. Can you please advice if the window on the sapphire is acceptable to you? I have taken photos under different lightings and angles. Please let me know what you think.

”Windowing” only counts when you look straight down on the gem. Any gem if tilted will have a window.
yes, your sapphire has a modest window looking straight down but that’s not uncommon with coloured gems.
Some people really dislike even a modest window, others like me just see that as part and parcel of the gemstone.
Your sapphire is very beautiful and it’s a stunning ring.
THIS is a window btw 224FC4C7-857C-48AB-B8EF-A6F5B431CEE8.jpeg

Thank you for your message. Now I feel better. I checked with my jeweler, he said if I don’t like the window, he can reset to have an enclosed bottom for the sapphire. The window is sometimes not visible in different lightning or angle. It looks totally fine in this photo tho. 7B0F640D-522D-426C-B68B-69DCD613671C.jpeg

The most important question is “does it bother you”? Some people will tolerate small windows if the gem speaks to them. Others want perfection. If I recall it was an expensive purchase and for me, that might be the deal breaker because I would want as near to perfection as I could get. I’m sorry that’s probably not helpful. It’s a beautiful ring but only if you love, love love it.

Just a heads up. This doesn’t always work. Try putting some aluminium foil under the stone and then putting it on your finger. This would replicate an enclosed basket your jeweller is suggesting.

It does have a bit of a window, but it isn't too bad! I don't think that enclosing or foiling the back would close it up too much. I think it would need a partial recut of the pavilion to close up the window. It would be pricey and might diminish some of the saturation and tone of that gorgeous blue!

I did a low-tech thing by just adding an aluminum foil at the back. I think it improved. What do you guys think? I tried different lightings as well. 68F3A00F-C316-4315-92B0-4DFCC9AD531C.jpeg

That does look great with the foil back!! I love low budget tests! haha

It makes me feel a lot better to see the improvement with the foil back. I will discuss with my jeweler to close the bottom. Hope it will solve the problem.

What a gorgeous ring and sapphire! Such a beautiful color. Wear it around for a while and see how she behaves in different lights and angles. If you do end up enclosing the bottom of the basket, please ask that they leave some space to get in there to clean the pavilion of the sapphire. I saw a ring once where the bottom was completely solid, but the sides had little openings to get into the undergallery.

Going to echo this comment. The Chinese have been using foil backs/finely woven under galleries to make their jade pop for centuries. The saturated sides reflect on the foil/under gallery and compensate for the unsaturated center.

Thank you all for your advices. The window does bother me and since the ring is not cheap at all, I am going to explore all options to make myself fully happy with it.

Guess I am inexperienced. I didn’t notice issues when I pick the loose gem. Oops.... Here is a photo of the stone

We all have different tolerances for windowed gems. You are the one who looks at the ring, and you have to be happy with it. Don't worry about what a group of strangers think.

Agreed, but posting for feedback and help you avoid a big mistake or get advice/ideas like a foil back to deal with a window

It is definitely a nice color, but in my humble opinion, the window is too large and is easily noticeable from quite a few angles

A lot of your photos show a tilt window, and the tilt window would be acceptable to me because that's found in most stones. The straight-on window though might be a bit much for me. It's not noticeable in some of your pictures but is in others. The very first picture in the thread - if you notice that all the time, that would drive me nuts. Windows I can't handle - I'm very forgiving of things like half and half extinction because it moves around as the gem tilts toward and away from me. But if there is a flaw that is static, that's where my limit is. The picture you show midway through the thread where you can't see the window - if it's like that some of the time and windowed some of the time, I would probably not be bothered. But I would definitely continue wearing it and thinking for at least a week about the closed back, and make sure your jeweler will be able to leave ways for you to clean so it doesn't accumulate dirt.

IMHO, the size, clarity and colour of the Sapphire outweighed the small window that I could see.

It is a very nice stone and the ring is stunning, thanks for sharing!

Most native cut sapphires are imperfect. They are cut for colour and size. Often when recut to close a window they lose so much of their saturation and character.

I tend to dislike windows in stones but I don’t think that window detracts too much from the beauty of the stone.

I would however have the bottom of the basket filled in because it will solve the issue.

I think it's beautiful and the window wouldn't bother me. Unless you could easily find / afford a stone of that (gorgeous) colour, cut, and size with absolutely no window - there's always going to be a trade-off. I would probably have the bottom enclosed though.

I wouldn’t even tweak the setting. I would enjoy the play of light. Your pictures show clear corners looking down into the center. I think it’s a tilt window you see at certain angles. No worries. Honestly, I would be thanking my lucky stars to have such a beautiful stone and setting. You did well! Enjoy!!

I would not advise an enclosed bottom unless it is done in such a way you can get access to the underside of the stone. Moisture/soap/grease build up is far more unsightly than a window, not to mention the odor.

The window is not that bad, but if it’s something that bothers you, perhaps you should get a new stone. Sapphire can be expensive, and you should be 100% happy with your purchase, and not have self doubt.

I would probably wear it for a while before I did anything. I personally would not close in the back because I can't stand dirt spots and not being able to easily clean them. My studs drive me nuts for exactly this reason.

Your ring is gorgeous! Just make sure you are happy with it.
