Is slightly grayish saturation a problem for pink sapphire?

Originally I posted this under my other thread about the pink sapphire I was considering from Yvonne but I'm willing to pull the trigger on one of these today so I figured I'd start a new thread.

The first stone has the cut that I really like but I'm wondering if the very slightly grayish saturation is an issue or is it something I most likely won't notice? That stone is also $140 less than the second but I am willing to pay the extra money if the gray saturation is going to be a problem.

First option:
GIA Code: rP*4/3
Hue: reddish purple
Tone: Medium light Saturation: very slightly grayish Eye clean to Slightly included 0.810 carats
Width: 5.20 mm Length: 5.20 mm Depth: 3.7 mm Round Portuguese
(H) Heat Enhancement Tanzania

Second option:
Bright Pink
1.09 carats
5.7mm x 3.9mm deep
VVS top clean gemstone
Round facet
"Assume traditional heat only. Guaranteed no other treatment of any kind
Note: This is a bright natural Sapphire from Sri-Lanka with very nice Pink color.
We see no evidence of heat treatment in this stone but to err on the safe side...assume traditional heat. Guaranteed no other treatment of any kind."

Thoughts?

No picture or links?

Colour is personal; some like a bit of gray whilst some want top hot colour.
Also, the description is given by the vendor, so it is subjective.

The MC is one heck of a pretty stone, especially with the Portuguese cut. My only concern is whether it is eye clean enough for you.

Thanks Chrono for your help I really appreciate it. I've never worked with them before, do I call them and ask them or do I really just need to get it and see it in person?

You can email them first, since they are in Bangkok.

I'd email David (of MC) and ask for a hand shot. He's usually very accommodating. That should give you a little more insight into whether or not you'd be good with the clarity, and it'd give you another view of the stone (which is always a plus).

I'm actually on the phone with them now lol!

Chrono, the person I spoke to said it has a haziness to it but it is a very nice stone otherwise. So that makes me a bit nervous now, I mean I guess it's possible I have seen a hazy sapphire and not known and still thought it was nice but what do you think?

Have you seen silky sapphires? That's the closest thing I can think of that you may have seen. It's really personal preference.

I have seen silky blue but not silky pink so I'm thinking maybe this would still work especially because it has that nice cut to it, maybe if it didn't have such a pretty cut it would be more of an issue.

Interesting; I would definitely want to see if he is able to provide a hand shot for it. I'm not sure whether he will provide a video.

Now they also offer a certificate for an additional charge of $55 for an AIGS mini or $77 for a full, is that something I should get as well?

I'd ask for a hand shot - I think that will tell you what you need to know. I don't believe you need a certificate. Shipping, if you're in the US, will be expensive enough.

Yes, I saw that about the shipping, I have emailed and asked for a hand shot, I'm kind of excited if I'm being honest.

Skip the lab report.

Definitely the MC one. I don't think it's greyer than the litnon one

Thanks OTL, what about this haziness issue, I would hate to lose this stone waiting for a hand shot if in all likelihood I will not be bothered by it. Granted, it's a personal preference thing but what is your opinion?

I went ahead and got the stone from Multicolour, just can't pass it up with the cut and color I'm looking for!

I can't wait to see your pics, once it gets to you.

Thanks Elle! Then I'll have to recruit some help in finding the perfect setting...problems problems :rolleyes2:

Hi, Stephanie

Because you've ordered it, the MultiColour link to the listing page for the stone no longer works. But as a FYI, MC's assessment of its gems' color uses GIA's former GemSet classifications:
https://www.gemsociety.org/article/what-happened-to-the-gia-gemset-color-and-hue-wheel/
MC provides the GemSet "scores" in a separate window that pops up when you click on the blue link(s) next to the color descriptor.

IIRC the stone you've ordered was classified as RP 4/3, so
  • red-purple in hue (what most of us would call color)
  • medium light (the 4) in tone
  • 3 in saturation (that's 3 out of 6, with 6 being the most vivid), or very slightly grayish
I tried to find some photos of the GemSet's RP "sticks" from the 324-count set, but no luck. And given how unlikely it is that our monitors/device screens are all in color-calibrated sync, a pic of the GemSet stick corresponding to that color designation probably wouldn't be all that useful to you anyway. But I thought the sapphire looked promising on MC's listing page -- fingers crossed that you are pleased upon seeing it in real life!

This was super interesting to read, thanks Molly. I'll be sure to post pictures so you guys can see how it looks IRL.
