Sorry for posting like a madman lately. I''ve got to get everything ready for the beginning of October and I feel like I''m running around with my head cut off. As some of you may know, I recently purchased an A Cut Above princess from Whiteflash. The link to the stone is below.

Now I just got the stone in the mail yesterday. And, I just started to learn that thin girdles on princess cuts are not necessarily a good thing. My concern is over the mounting of the stone and the durability. Whether or not I NEED to used v-tipped prongs or I can use the rounded prongs. Do you think the girdle on this stone is too thin? If it is, how can it be considered an AGS 0 (Proportions:0)? As of now, I love absolutely everything about the stone except the girdle. Should I be worried?

Thin girdles should be fine. It''s very thin or extremely thin that should worry you. All princesses are prone to corner breakage; it''s just the nature of the beast, so to speak. V-prongs are a good idea...but personally, I just don''t like the look very much, so I had mine set in non-V prongs. Either way, get it insured in case anything happens.

So...my humble opinion is that you should keep your gorgeous stone, and set it however you want (consider V-prongs, but they''re not a necessity), but definitely insure it!

I thin girdle is okay. But it is something to keep in mind as your considering settings. Very thin is the one to worry about the most.

I think your diamond is lovely. And if you are really concerned about what WF told you, I would simply call them, and talk to them about why they emphasized the V prongs for your stone.

I''m a worrier. So if it were my princess, I''d call them up and talk things through with them. They''ll shoot you straight. No worries.
You are looking at fabulous designers for your setting (mark morrel ) and they will take your stone''s safety into account when designing your setting for you, so you will be in good hands.

jstarfireb speaks the truth; the skill of the jeweler is what's most important when setting any princess cut because of the vulnerable corners.

Girdle thicknesses of thin, med and stk are all perfectly acceptable. A diamond will not receive a top cut grade with a girdle that poses a risk to durability. Remember also than 'thin' represents a range, not a fixed thickness. Once that range is above vtn you're fine, and with your diamond 1.7-2.8% runs closer to med. See the chart in this post for a graphic and more info. Hope this is helpful.

See. WF to the rescue again. Your fine. Just make sure you stick to a skilled jeweler for the setting.

Wow, thank you all so much for the excellent posts. JohnQuixote, your link helped me out immensely. I feel so much better. The only reason I was freakin'' was because of the chart I saw on this page:

Gypsy...Whiteflash to the rescue again? More like you guys to the rescue again! Thanks again.

I''m just glad you have the right resources now to make an educated setting choice. Congrats on your diamond, and I can''t wait to see your finished ring. (Which you MUST take many photos of and post on Show me the ring).

I promise...I will take photos and post them when everything is done. I will, however, probably have to wait until after I give her the ring. We''re going to Jamaica in October and I''m giving the ring to her on our first night there....sunset on the beach. I would die if I took pictures and something happened like they didn''t delete properly and she found them on the computer. Oooooooh that would stink. But, I will definitely post them then. Thanks again!
