Is it possible to modify a semi-mount to look like a Helzberg setting I like

Hi there - newbie in the house roll.

I found a ring style at Helzberg that I would like to fill with the diamonds I currently own from my engagement ring & band and other gifts given to me over the years. I found a setting at Helzberg that I think will work perfectly as my original stone is not large, although quite pretty, so that I still want it featured prominently in the design. Here''s the link to the ring: http://www.helzberg.com/product/5-8ct+tw+d...tby=newArrivals.

Not knowing the type of labor or difficulty required in making custom settings or modifying/reworking semi-mounts, how difficult is it to modify this type of mount: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A:IT&ih=011 to make the design I want or can it even be done? If so, how labor intensive is it and what other factors could go into a jewelers estimate - a rough estimate on how much could I expect to pay to get something like this done would be great though I know it''s different everywhere.

A couple other factors/options I have been researching as I search for the perfect setting are as follows: I would be willing to buy the semi-mount from the jeweler as well as the extra stones I would need (2 10pt rounds, SI1) and (2 baguettes around the same size) but I am also willing to buy the mount elsewhere and buy the extra diamonds from the jeweler who would do the re-work and the stone setting. If I buy a mount elsewhere is there a place I can buy empty mounts?

In the end I am trying to use what I have already, find the setting I want but be wise with my money as well as fair to the jeweler. I have a limited budget which is part of why I am willing to piece things together, but I don''t want to shot myself in the foot by giving the jeweler a set of circumstance that don''t allow them to do what they need to and be able to guarantee their work on the ring.

Hope that makes sense! I appreciate your advice and am willing to learn smile.gif

I think it makes more sense to have a custom setting made for your stones rather than modifying an existing setting. Just take the picture of the one you like to some custom jewelers and get estimates. Welcome to PS!

Would you mind telling me why? From what I understand it''s more expensive to do that and I''m working with some rather large budget constraints. My understanding (and keep in mind, I am a newbie and totally know it) is that it would be less expensive to find an existing mount and modify it.

bump

anybody else????

I know there are some key differences in these rings, but I guess what''s most important is that the center area be like the Helzberg where it is a combination of 5 stones versus one big stone.

For some reason, the links aren''t working for me. I have always had my rings modified rather than custom made but I''ve only ever made minor changes. Sometimes if you over modify, you take the chance on ruining the structural integrity of the ring. Maybe you can post the pics of the links you''re talking about or resubmit the links.

I am not able to get the link to work

I''m curious about this too- I actually have a helzberg setting that I am in love with also and my own diamond that I would like to put into it. I have a very small budget and I cannot find anything even close to the ring that I am looking for on any of the "go-to" websites on here.... I''m hoping to go to a custom jeweler and find out how much it would be to create something vs. resetting the existing mounting.

Here are the links again - hope they work. If not, I attached the helzberg pic and am working on the "cushion" type I was hoping to modify. Thanks to Belle (great name :) for posting another link in the FAQ for loading pictures as my file name was causing me problems!

The one I like:

The type I want to know if I can modify - and when I say that, I am just talking about the center stone so that it could accommodate 5 stone that would form a cushion shape. I''m less concerned about the side details as the center and would be willing to look at different mount that was similar in style.

I''m gonna guess that''s a highly unlikely project. The setting you''re starting with is for one stone to be dropped in. The Helzberg setting was made likely with the 9 stones comprising the center first, the halo to fit second. You''d have to somehow get 9 stones to fit exactly in that semi-mount (5 rounds, 4 baguettes), and I don''t think it''s possible or cost effective. I wouldn''t buy the semi-mount with that in mind.

Hi, I''m sorry but I have a similar question- i''m not trying to highjack the thread.

That is the setting that I am really interested in. I have a family diamond that is a bit larger and much better quality, although it is a RB and not a princess- however I do not believe that would be a Huge issue. (although I have NO clue!)

My question is, this setting (with the preset diamond) is blowing our budget out of the water. (I know its not a typical PS budget- it is what it is) I"m trying to find other options but can''t seem to come up with anything with all the elements that I love about this one... and darnit- I''m going to get what I want,.. hehe

Would it be easier/cheaper to design something similar with a local jeweler? Keep looking? Or?????

Thanks

Ditto! If you want a ring like the Helzberg one, I think your best bet is definitely going custom. Do you have a good independent jeweler in your area? You may want to bring your diamonds to them and ask what can be done with them as far as the setting goes, and how much it would be. You could e-mail Whiteflash.com as well (they do great custom work!), but without knowing the exact stats of the diamonds you currently own, it might be hard for them to give you an accurate quote.

Ok, that makes sense - could it be dropped in if the right size center space was found? I ask that because the jeweler I initially visited had a catalog and it showed the same setting with different sized center spaces to accommodate different stone sizes. Of course at that point it becomes mathematics, but is it "theoretically" possible? I mean, I will ask the jeweler myself, but I thought I would at least ask here first
