I have an old european cut diamond that is graded as VVS2. I am very careful with my ring, taking it off when I'm cleaning, exercising etc. There are a few spots with abraded facets that I have come to understand is normal with rings that have experienced wear and tear over the years.

My question is, can CZ nick a diamond? My toddler niece got ahold of my ring while I was weeding my garden boxes and was banging my ring into a CZ ring. I louped my ring and I noticed a few little nicks and/or abraded areas that I never noticed before.

Hardness is not toughness.
A good example of this is your iphone glass, which is hard to scratch but easy to shatter and break. The same things goes for your watch glass, which is saphhire glass.
Diamonds are extremely hard, but also very brittle, especially at the girdle. If you give enough force in a very small area, a diamond will chip or get nicked.

Yes, cubic zirconia can nick a diamond.

I can buy into that possibility if your girdle is extremely thin, but if it's not, then I think it is unlikely. If it is extremely thin, I'd recommend either putting your stone in a bezel or halo setting, or send it to have girdle rehab and eliminate the areas than are too thin.

the girdle is fine actually - I was concerned about the facets - there was some light abrasion before this incident so I can't tell if it was made worse or not. I'm going to have it looked at the jewelry shop where we purchased from. Thanks for the response!

Wood can chip a diamond if it struck it right so yea a cz could damage a diamond.
