I say grain lines?

Polishing - you can also see them going in different directions in the two blue reflections in the lower right.

And perhaps also in half of the upper main facet at 2 o'clock position?

(With the eye of faith...

The thing that indicates they are polish lines as opposed to grain lines is that they stop at the facet junction. Grain lines would usually continue into the next facet.

Sometimes you'll see polishing lines only on one facet, indicating that the cutter had a hard time getting a good polish on that facet than the others, usually because of the crystal orientation.

Sometimes you'll see polish lines going one direction on one facet, and another direction on another facet.

Serg, did this diamond receive a "good" grade on polish?

Hi Richard,
I will check GIA report in Monday.

I also say polishing lines.

Great educational pic for us regular folk!

My OEC has lots of facets that look like that. Was it harder to polish diamonds back in the old days (before 1921, when Grandpa gave it to Grandma)?

YES, Gliterata. And technological improvements make that 'very good' grade to be much more frequent in polish than symmetry on GIA certs...

Richard,

You are right. Polish is good only.
This stone was cut more then 10 years ago.

Question:

Anyone have Gary Roskin's book. In the section on Graining he speaks about Surface lines which he says are due to reversals in crystal growth, but then goes on to speak about Surface Graining also.
What is the difference here? Is he calling polishing lines surface lines??

looks like polishing lines,If it were grain lines it would've streched to part of the next facet,
But it could also be the angle from which the camera is showing it.
Check the G.I.A certifcate under comments, they should specify what these lines are.
by the way what kind of camera did you use???? great picture!!

Diamondsman

This is an old post which I resurrected with the lines as I was reading it after looking at Gary Roskin's book. I believe Serg posted that it was polish lines as he read it on the diamond certificate later and that diamond was cut 10 years ago.

I am just wondering about the descriptions in Gary Roskin's book?
