I was wondering what the best way to protect and identify a diamond is. I heard that gemprint wasn''t around anymore and that laser inscriptions are not totally reliable because they can easily be forged by someone with the will and knowledge. Is there any kind of gem fingerprinting out there, particuliarly one that can be used on an already set stone?

I think you need to identify why you would want to have a fingerprint in the first place. Once you have a set diamond and are in possession of its exact measurements, its color grade and the placement of its inclusions, you have most of what you''d normally need to re-identify it anytime you needed to. All you''d need is a loupe, a measuring gauge and decent fllourescent lighting to be quite sure the stone was okay. No one will switch a poor diamond and give you a fine one on purpose. The opposite might happen, and you can see such a switch unless you just are negligent about looking.

Gemprint does exist still, but only with GCAL reports on unset diamonds. ImaGem can make a fingerprint of your diamond, even a mounted stone, so long as the exact weight is known and the exact depth can be measured with a highly accurate tool. I''d say there is little reason to go to that extreme, but it can be done. You might consider engraving work to be done on a mounted diamond''s girdle, so no removal would be required.

I don''t offer any of these choices, so I''m not promoting myself as a source for you. Maybe someone participating here can make an arrangement to help you out. My old lab, AGA, can coordinate an ImaGem process for you although there is currently no place other than ImaGem who can verify the identity at a later date. Sort of too soon for making it a practical thing, I believe.

Here is Cindy. She has an imperfection that helpts to identify her. The next image is Cindy without her identifier. Would you be fooled? the eye is a very good tool for re-identification.

Three items:

1) Dave, I see you''re a consultant with AGA now. Are you mostly motorcycling when you''re not consulting?

2) Who is that above under the picture of Cindy Crawford?

3) I like your new picture on Pricescope!

I am a partner in Diamond & Gem Laboratories of America with a location in Horsham, PA and Mumbai, India. We do certification work and quality control work for major chains and large manufacturers. Most of the business is conducted in India for domestic Indian commerce, but we have a couole major chains as clients here in the USA. Another partnership I participate in is a firm offering Hallmarking and Assay of precious metals used in jewelry soley for the India domestic market. India is about to mandate all jewelry to be verified by licensed firms before delivery to retailers and we have jumped out early to get into this growing economy.

I will consult with AGA as needed, but I have trained an excellent staff that should be just fine without me ordering them aound anymore. I'll miss them more than they will miss me.

My own professional direction will be dispute resolution, damage claims, mediation and expert testimony. It won't be terifically busy, but it will be highly technical and involving work which I look forward to.

Motorcycling time may increase. I intend to ride out to Las Vegas for the JCK Show at the end of May, park the bike for a few weeks in Tucson, ride to Gilette Wyoming for the BMW National Rally and then ride back to Philly in July. As long as the cell phone works, I can travel and keep connected. Not a bad situation and I have no comlaints. My new datlas.com website should be up and running in a few weeks or days. Sorry for taking the thread off course, too.
