A new TV commercial for Dove chocolate caught my eye.

They used a living actress but used CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) to replace her face with that of Audrey Hepburn, who has been dead for 21 years.

The commercial is video, not just a Photoshoped still photo.
It seemed Hepburn had risen from the dead.

Technically, I thought it was compelling so I immediately Googled up what was happening.

Watch the commercial here.

Here is the living hepburn look-alike actress with reference dots the computer used to synchronize movement the faces.

I don't know how to feel about it...

In a way it feels sort of sad to me but I can't figure out why...not sure.

But I'm definitely not on the side of really cool and "neat"...I fall more on the creepy side although that may be too strong a word or not the right word...

I loved Hepburn.
She was unique and magical.

I feel both appreciation and resentment for what Dove's ad agency has done.

On one hand it's a moment of,,,,,, "She's Back!" :appl:
Ont the other hand it's.,,,,, GMAB! Let her RIP. :angryfire:

I don't even have any special attachment to her or feel any particular way about her...(I actually don't know much about her, believe it or not).

But the fact that she's no longer here...and that she looks so sweet in the commercial...and alive...something just doesn't feel right to me. It's a mixed feeling kind of like what you're describing...in a way it's nice to "see" her but in a way I feel I shouldn't be...we shouldn't be...

Yes, something just doesn't feel right.

I really really hate these commercials. There is one with Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum cleaner, for pete's sake. It's close to theft or plagiarism or something very unpleasant, to me. I'm sure the actors' estates permitted it & get a fee, but these people spent their working lives building something & it steams me to see it trashed like this. I doubt they would have made ads like these for any amount of dough.

Next time I'll tell you how I really feel about it. ;)

I agree with Laurie's whole post but especially the bolded part - that's why I think these commercials are both insulting and creepy.

That's just it - they didn't get a say in whether or not they wanted to represent this product. Maybe if they'd done an ad for a company when they were alive and the company sought to reuse it for its vintage appeal. Then it would be cool.

We have this advert for some time in the UK, and my reaction when I first saw it was that they did not a bad job in finding someone who looked like her (I did not realise she was partly the result of CGI and thought she was one of those lookalikes).

And no, I did not find it creepy, not since Forest Gump when they used CGI to include certain historically important people into the plot of the film.

DK :))

I fail to see why religion has been brought up when it is against forum policy. At least it used to be. Nothing personal against you, Kenny, I just fail to see what this has to do with religion.

I don't really care. They were people, actors. Not gods. In fact, I'm glad they are appearing in modern day commercials and being enjoyed with nostalgia or possibly introduced to an entirely new generation.

I suppose maybe if someone was marketing Audrey Hepburn sex toys I'd take offense. Dove chocolate? Meh. Who knows, maybe that was her favorite brand ;))

And count me in here too. Hate this.

I am biased though because I happen to love everything Audrey. She was an amazing woman and embodied qualities I so admired. Extraordinary and enchanting, delicate but strong is a good way to describe her from my POV and when I was younger she was my idol.

There is something special about her and she was not like others. And this feels like a desecration to her IMO. Sometimes technology is used for purposes I don't agree with or like. This is one such example.

I agree with this. I don't like the commercial because Audrey Hepburn didn't get to choose for herself if she'd like to endorse Dove chocolate. I wouldn't mind if they had just left the lookalike actor as an imitation, but it bothers me that they changed the face to BE Audrey Hepburn.
