Hi Everyone!

I have had a sapphire (9 x 7mm) oval that is blue with a purple shift in certain lighting. I have had it sitting here loose forever and constantly change my mind on the type of setting i want it in and Im reaching out for help!

So, about the sapphire - its not brilliantly cut but i love the colour of it. I was thinking i would bezel set it but assume this would darken the stone and thats not really the effect im going for so like low profile prongs for the sapphire and maybe bezel the diamonds? - i have 2 x pear diamonds (about 20 points each i think maybe a fraction smaller i cant remember!) or a pair of about .20ct rounds loose as well that can be used in making it into a 3 stone. Pretty sure i want to halo it I have a large finger size so need ample coverage.

I will be getting jewelryhoo to make the setting for me, Im all set to go but need some help with actually choosing a style!! Its a just for fun ring so its not too serious but cant seem to get over this indecision :nono: !

here are 2 styles i kind of like - but would love any help - this sapphire is long overdue for a home!

Mrs H - From your description, I too would suspect that your stone will darken if bezel set. That being said, I wouldn't go with either of the settings you've picked because they are bezel settings. Are you thinking of changing them to prong set?

sorry i know this one is a PS'ers ring but i cant remember who it belongs to - i hope they dont mind me posting

yes im considering low profile prongs so i dont ruin the colour and maybe bezel set the side diamonds - i think the prong set sapphire is about the only thing i am sure i want - the rest i cant decide!

thankyou for the link cellentani - the photos of it pre-bezel are very helpful

I would love to see the stone, if you don't mind.

perfect timing - my USB card reader just arrived so I can finally upload some pics from my camera

I would not bezel set it either; I find for colour shifter and changers, I prefer to have it prong set to allow the stone's colour to be easily affected by different light sources. The reason for the lack of brilliance in your sapphire is due to the large window - light leaks right through and is never returned to the eye (hence I can see your fingers through the stone in the first picture). Something sort of enclosed like a prong set halo will help minimize the appearance of the window while still allowing some light play for the colour shift.

thanks chrono this is exactly advice i was looking for - it was a pre pricescope purchase and now the poor cut bothers me (alot), but i still love the colour of it enough to set it. im hoping once its set i can enjoy the stone for what it is.

You can always ask one of the cutters to recut it for you.

They will retain the shape and usually can keep the size of the oval, but it will lose weight as the back must be restructured.

I think Dana at Master Cut Gems might do that kind of work, and I know that Jerry Newman at http://www.gemartservices.com does that. I have purchased stones from both and been extremely pleased with both of them.

There are other excellent cutters, but not many of them will cut a stone that they don't own.

I actually wondered about re-cutting - do you know a ballpark figure on how much this costs?

Michael E does recuts too, you could shoot him an email and ask about it. I've talked to him several times about it!

Recuts cost anywhere from $100 to $300 (and possibly more depending on how complicated the cut is) and the lapidary will need to see the stone in person first to be able to advice on the approximate final carat weight and dimension measurement. Note that recuts are not without risks as well. Your stone could lose saturation, zoning could become more apparent, a fracture/feather could grow, etc Hence many precision faceters who post on PS refuse to accept recutting work.

Is there any kind of list of cutters who'll recut a customer-ownded stone? I have a large tanzanite I'd like some fine-tuning done to.

Jerry Newman (not sure of his website)
Dana at www.mastercutgems.com

Just a quick thankyou to everyone who helped :)

I have posted my sapphire off to Jerry Newman for a re-cut - the stone is going to loose probably alot of weight to achieve the final result but this is inevitable and I cant wait to see it after its weightloss makeover - I will be sure to post pics in a few weeks :)

Best of luck with the recut...hope it looks even better. :appl:
