Sharing the new addition to my collection!

So it started when I was offered a 40 carat faint pink sapphire. I showed it to all my friends and family without telling them what it was. I only asked them to tell me what colour they saw. Most of them said white, some said lavenderish faint pink. Only the poor kiddo said light pink and he desperately wanted me to buy it. I didn’t though because it was just way too light for me. He was a bit disappointed. Like his Mumma he loves big rocks.

Anyways an opportunity arose for me to purchase this stone. At 17+ carats I thought it would but a nice future addition to the kiddo’s rock collection. In the meantime I could set it and wear it. It is imperfect with inclusions and a window (I know I said never to a window but tourmalines of this size tend to have problematic cuts and noting that it’s going to sit in his rock collection one day, I am more forgiving about this window) but boy does she glow!!! She’s glowy in any lighting and that makes the window less noticeable). She comes with a reputable report and is from Mozambique.

Originally I was going to set her in a 2mm diamond double halo because I didn’t want to blow so much money on a setting but you know me and my love of frufru. I sent my bench an inspirational frufru design, lamenting that they can go ahead with the 2mm. Haha unbeknownst to me they came back with CADs for two designs. One for the 2mm double halo and this design inspired by Oscar Heyman. My heart was just not in the 2mm halo. It was either this or bust. So I went with this and I’m so glad I did! It’s the perfect home for Sea Salt Coconut! The blue sapphires were originally supposed to be pink spinels but my bench couldn’t find stock so I went with blue sapphires. I think I like it better with the blue sapphires!

It’s a convertible ringdant but unfortunately (in my unbridled enthusiasm) I chose a very risqué dress whilst modelling it and if I were to post those pics the mods would be greatly unhappy with me so I’m going to let Rock the Universe model it for you as a necklace :lol-2:

And here she is with Sea Salt Coconut her namesake

Glad to hear you have found a Paraiba colour Tourmaline and the ringdant looks great, and I am looking forward to see pics of you wearing it was a pendant.

Thanks for sharing!

Holy moly girl.. this stone is amazing! I need some tips from you on how to find amazing big rocks. Your kiddo has great taste just like his mama. And this ring is glorious and frufru just the way you like it haha it's so you!

BTW, the 'window' is not that obvious in the photos.

And yes to your kiddo having good taste at a young age!

Thank you!!! I’m relieved to hear that! The glow hides it really well. I also suspect that had I used white gold it would have hidden the window even better (there’s a whole YG disc on the underside to make it a ringdant, and if that was white it would close the window heaps) but alas I’m in my yellow gold era!

Gah!!! I need to find appropriate clothing to show it to you folks as a pendant!

what a gorgeous glowy stone and I think the blue sapphires complement her really well!!! thank you for sharing!

@mellowyellowgirl “sea salt coconut” sounds like my fav body scrub! What a perfect name for a lovely, evocative ring. It reminds me of the sea and lakes. It is hugely calming. I like the sapphires - they add depth to the water, and the diamonds could be the crests of waves.
The Labubus are terrific models for the ring!

Went on a bush walk with her and there was a bit of sun. She’s ridiculous! One of my friends thinks she’s from AliExpress because of the “ unnatural colour”

She is magnificent, mellow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like the glow and even the inclusions mask any windowing. And I love, love, love that she is a giant, perfect cushion shape. Wanted to mention... you said she is "paraiba color." But if she is copper/manganese bearing, even from Mozambique, she is a true paraiba!

Once again, I ask... is there a waitlist to become your little sister?

Aww thank you! Means so much to me coming from you!!! The kid likes a big hunk of rock he can get his mitts on (although this may change when he’s an adult) and he’s a very tactile person so I jumped at the chance of something reasonably large that he can solidly man handle when he inherits it. It wasn’t me being a size tart this time!!!

Now onto the name! This is most perplexing!!! According to AIGS because there is copper I may refer to it as “paraiba type tourmaline” but GIA (like you) says it can be called paraiba tourmaline. I don’t know who to listen to!

Yeeeeeeech I looked at the bill for the ring and died inside at how much I spent on the natural marquise diamonds (and who the heck is going to buy second hand marquise diamonds because the kid is not going to want them). Maybe he’ll keep the whole piece and won’t pull out the centre stone to display with all his malachite etc.

It's definitely paraiba! They just say that to cover their bums, because it's not technically from Paraiba, Brazil. But this variety of tourmaline (blue to blue-green copper/manganese bearing cuprian/elbaite material) is simply called "paraiba" in the trade, regardless of origin. If it were blue to blue-green without any or enough copper/manganese, then I would call it "paraiba color." Don't sell her short now. Again, she's glorious!!

That stone sure looks like a glowy cuprian tourmaline to me, which in my world means it's Paraiba and gorgeous! The kiddo is gonna have a lot of magnificent big hunks of rock, lol!

Exactly!

Very regal, @mellowyellowgirl I could just picture you waving your hand around and have everybody else do work for you. I'd certainly be too distracted by today to be able to do anything wearing something like that.

My goodness, I hope your son will keep it whole in one piece when he inherits it one day. Enjoy your beautiful ringdant in both it's forms for many years to come!

Keep coming back to admire him! Mellow, was this stone sold set in a WG diamond halo ring? I could've sworn I saw it somewhere previously. It came with a GIA report too and was around a 17ct cushion. How many in this size can there be?!

All videos provided to me were of her in loose form but that’s not to say she didn’t have another life I don’t know about.

Awww I’m tickled that you like her! I made sure to do all the good munchkin checks. Not clarity enhanced (hehe it seems like they get slapped with a clarity enhanced label if they are) but I was told to ALWAYS assume heated even if I don’t see it on the report.

Is this a thing Autumn? Since it was an assumption of heat I rolled with it but are there non heated ones?

It's beautiful!! What an amazing color! It's a gorgeous ring and looks perfect on you.

Yeah, it's safe to assume most are heated. That's because labs (at this time) cannot decipher whether any heat was done naturally (deep within the earth) or applied by man. Of course, that doesn't mean they're all heated, just that since we can't really tell, we should simply assume. However, there have been rare exceptions where I've seen the AGL and GIA certify a paraiba as unheated. It doesn't affect the value much that I've noticed.

I just found the ring I was talking about (sold/etsy)... it can't be yours, because it seems this one was certified by the GIA as clarity enhanced. Same general weight and shape though, which is why I recalled it! Your ring blows this one out of the water.

He’s going to keep the entire setting!!! Looked at me like I was mad when he realised I thought he was going to dismantle it! He says it’s the best way to display the gem anyway plus he loves the little blue sapphires (kids are so random, he finds them very appealing) and wants them on display as well.
