I''m having a diamond set in an e-ring, and the jeweler offered to have the ring inscribed inside the band. How long an inscription can be put inside the ring? Is it only big enough for the two names?

I want to know if I can fit a couple of (short) sentences from her favorite story.
thanks!!

I think that is something that I would ask the jeweler...I'm sure they know being that they've probably done many inscriptions.

It depends on who's doing the engraving. I've spoken to hand engravers who could probably do it. If you're in the Los Angeles area, I could recommend a couple of people.

frogman,

This depends on what technique is being used to do the engraving and how much room is available on the inside of the ring. There are often portions below the stones, for example, where there is no metal on which to put engraving. Also, hallmarks are sometimes taking up some of the available space. For machine engraving, the classic rule is 34 characters if you can write around the entire ring (like with a wedding band). A hand engraver can do about twice that and can perhaps do more than one line if the ring has sufficient width. Naturally, if the engraver only has access to 1/4 of the ring, they will be able to fit a lot less. The jeweler where you are having the engraving done should be able to give a straight answer to your question.

What are "hallmarks"?

Hallmarks are the engravings done to show type of metal (say 18K or PLAT), and could also include brands.

Thanks Motcs. I was also thinking that engraving space, if the ring has diamonds, could be taken up by the diamond breathing/cleaning holes. This is something that my fiance and I were concerned about since we want engraving on our wedding bands, which have diamonds. However, the jeweler stated it would not be a problem!

Yeah, it's no problem as long as your message has a lot of "O"s in it.
