I''ve been shopping around online and at B&M stores for an engagement ring and stone. I''m looking for a round, 0.8-1.2 range on a 3,500 to 4,000 budget for the diamond. I''ve mainly been looking at excellent cut diamonds and I am willing to sacrifice on color and clarity (gnerally looking around G/H/I, SI1/SI2) to get a well cut diamond around 1 carat. At B&M stores I''ve been able to find diamonds in this range, but with EGL certs that do not grade cut. Online cut quality/price has generally been much better, but I plan to have the diamond set in a simple solitaire and change later after shopping around with my girlfriend. If I buy a diamond and have it set in a solitaire at an online vendor won''t I have to either:
1. Give the ring up for several days to have it changed to a different ring at the same vendor.
2. Bring it to a B&M store, pay a fee to reset the stone and have an extra solitaire ring with no stone.
Given those choices would you recommend buying a stone online and having it set at a B&M store (but having to pay a fee to set the stone)?

I''d also love some advice on buying online; I''ve been looking at james allen because they have good prices and the cert/picture for most diamonds, with IS on request. I''ve noticed JA calls the cut on some stones "idea" even though it may have a GIA cert with very good or excellent, does anyone have experience with their criteria for an "idea" cut? I would love to buy through WF/GOG or another vendor known for top of the line cut quality, but I''m having trouble finding anything that fits my criteria and budget. Here are a few selections I''ve been looking at, please give me your opinion and any alternatives you think might work out, thank you in advance for your help!

I don''t know how you can say the 1.15 is a clean, bigger diamond if there is no picture...

You need an Ideal Scope for the 1.02.

Not really loving any of them, though.

Sorry, I meant to say that based on the lab report it seems to be a larger carat with good clarity. I would say that I''m not sold on any of those 3 either, unfortunately I don''t have a great sense of what makes a diamond (especially when shopping online) a must have versus a pass.

Hi Gabe and welcome!

Out of the diamonds you posted, I like the GOG one best. If you would like, we could help you search for some more options? Is there any way you could find out more about the type of setting your GF would like ( unless it is a surprise of course) and have the diamond placed in its final setting to begin with? As to the vendor's criteria for their ideal cuts, many of them use this term but the only meaningful use of the term pertains to AGS lab's AGS0 cut grade, but I couldn't tell you what the vendors look for to award a diamond this grade, so I wouldn't rely on it to get you a well cut diamond.

I had a look around for you, here are some suggestions, with SI clarities make sure you check they are eyeclean to your standards by asking the vendor.

#2 (the one from GOG) at first looked OK to me, scoring a 2.2 on the HCA tool and falling just on the cusp of the AGS0 range. But doesn''t that Aset image look pretty bad?

My favorite is the second one Lorelei picked.

Thank you for the suggestions Lorelei! I''d actually had my eye on your second pick originally, but after talking to JA they didn''t think it would be eye clean (you can see the flaw on the table reflected in the facets). Let me know what you think of this choice:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?find=1&cid=130&item=1206459
~$3,700
Shape: Round
1 carat, !, SI2, GIA - ex/ex/ex (1.5 on HCA)
Depth: 61.7%, Table: 57.0%
Crown angle- 34.8, Pavil angle - 40.8
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 6.41*6.43*3.96

I have this one reserved because it caught my eye, and seems like a nice diamond in my budget. I did notice in the IS and the picture that there is a flaw on the edge of the diamond that seems a bit noticable, though I still think it would be eye clean.

The last one looks good. You could probably cover the edge inclusion with a prong.

Thanks for letting me know Gabe about the other one!

The one you linked looks good, as J said that inclusion might be prong coverable.
