Well, I am as out of the loop as you can be, when it comes to diamonds.

I have about 2500$ to spend on it, if I buy it flat out, but, I realize a ring would not be a bad thing to build credit on... So I will say that I can go up to 4000$ on this.

Where are good places to look for quality stones, in pretty, but plain, settings?

What do I need to consider when buying my first diamond ring?

Any help is VERY appreciated.

Take care.

Alex

Alex, I have to disagree that a ring is a good thing to "build credit" on. You really should only purchase luxury goods with what you can afford, which is $2500...that extra $1500 will end up being a lot more costly in the long run and despite what many people think diamonds are not a good investment.

That being said, you can get plenty for your money with the original budget. You'll want to get an ideal cut stone for the most sparkle, and as far as where to start, I would recommend starting to read everything you can under the KNOWLEDGE tab above. And most importantly, when you are ready to buy, make sure to run the stone by us first so we can make sure you are getting a winner.

Good vendors to start with would be Whiteflash and Good Old Gold if you are looking for a round stone.

Hi Alex and welcome,

Just to clarify, if you are thinking of maximising the value of a diamond ring concerning trading it in to get a larger diamond later on, then the best way is to go with a vendor who has a solid upgrade policy. Otherwise you would be lucky to get back 30 - 50% of what you paid, diamonds are a poor investment.

Also Neat gave good advice! It is cut which will get you a pretty diamond, so that is important to concentrate on, then carat, colour and clarity ( if verified eyeclean) are down to budget and preference. Here is a list of popular Pricescope vendors you could consider,

www.whiteflash.com

www.goodoldgold.com

www.winkjones.com

I know the three vendors above have upgrade polices should that be a consideration for you. Is it a round diamond you want?

I appreciate your hasty response, and information/opinion.

I will check those places out, and keep waiting for anymore information I can get!

Alex

Alex,

Agree with my friends here...and could direct you below my signature, but...since you're here...and not saying where you are...

I'll add you might want to a) look at this one for perspective, as well as consider their simpler rings, and then, b) consider giving Wink a call. He's showing (on the search by cut database) 2 jobbies at .71 I...one SI 1 and one VS2...and these are worth a conversation.

Lorelei, thank you for all the help. I am looking for either round or princess cut. I will check out the dealers, and see what I can figure out. I appreciate the help more than I can say.

Regular Guy, you lost me at "jobbies." I have no idea as to the meaning of that, or any of the descriptions you gave after that...
An explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Alex

You are very welcome Alex! We will help you through and get you a beautiful diamond!

Have a look around and decide which shape you like best out of round or Princess then we can go from there.

Ha, not sure what jobbies is either but Im sure he was talking about this search and 2 potential RB''s, It would be best to look for princess cuts here too......................On cut rank put both bars on excellent. When looking for a princess I would just look at AGS diamonds

The two stones Ira is talking about:
RB 0.71 I SI1 $1,874.40 GIA 62.1 56 VT-M FACETED Excellent Excellent n 35 15.1 40.9 43.3 5.71 - 5.76 x 3.56

RB 0.71 I VS2 $2,044.80 GIA 61.5 56 M-Faceted n Excellent Excellent n 34.8 15 40.8 43 5.73 - 5.79 x 3.54

You can call Wink to get more information. 1-800-524-7904 or [email protected]

I''ve worked with Wink and found him to be very helpful. .71 is a lot of bang for your buck and at those prices you''d still have plenty for a simple setting.

Breann (and Addy are) correct, and since you're considering Princesses along with rounds...there are many also of these in your price point at WF, including this one.

Do read the two links below my signature...for my perspective.
