Hello
I purchased my 1.50 carat Emerald Diamond and it looked wonderful not set and at the wholesalers. I take it to get set and in certain angles and light most of the diamond is covered in a black shadow. Thinking that it was my setting I got my jeweller (not the wholesaler who sold me the diamond) to place it in a different setting and the same shadow appeared. Here, are the specifics of my diamond:
Meas: 7.85 x 5.45 x 3.96; Polish and Symmetry: Good; Depth: 72.7%; Table: 78%; Griddle Slightly Thick to Thick ; Colour E; Clarity SI1.
Help, why is this happening?

It is likely your head is obscuring a lot of light and the proportions are possibly unfavourable for close up viewing.
Try this
Take a sheet of white copy paper and poke a small hole in the center with a pen.
Peep thru at the stone - then remove the paper - if it all goes whit then I am right.
Then try holes in different places in the paper, and smaller pieces of paper, peek over the top, from the left and right etc

I am thinking along the same lines as Garry, sounds like obstruction. Try his test.

I am a little confused? Where is the paper meant to be when i look through it?

sorry now i get it, there is still a shaddow

If you hold the stone away from you does the diamond looks bright?

No the diamond still has the shaddow even if it is away from me

Is it possible you could post a photograph? It probably is obstruction you are seeing but a photo could be helpful if you can capture what you are seeing.

I twould help if we could see photo''s of you looking at the diamond.

they can be anon taken from behnd - but shoing the room.
And are you looking in one place only - it may be you have a dark ceiling and you are seeing that effect.
Also do not look at it in direct sunlight.

HI Catibati,
I have a few questions:
What type of settings was the diamond placed in?
Was it actually set, or just placed on top of?
Was the setting a closed bottom- or could light enter the bottom of the diamond?

If you loved the general characteristics of the stone, but seeing it set left you unhappy, I would think that you need to rectify it.
Some stones just look dark once set.
This can be due to the stone, or the setting.
When you looked at it loose, I''d suspect it was only in a tweezers at a desk perhaps?
Or did you get a good look at it in varied lighting sources?

I changed my diamond from an H colour to an E and have had both diamonds in the same setting. The H colour never showed any shadow but the E colour does. I have had my diamond in a position so that light can get under the diamond. I have looked at the diamond in may many lights, night day, inside and out, when the diamond is away from me and also close to me I still see darkness in various angles. I was once asked if it was a coloured diamond. I am getting very upset over this and so is my fiancé. I am thinking of calling the person who sold it to me ASPA (I purchased it 4 weeks ago today) and asking FOR another diamond she is very reputable and I am sure would be happy to exchange. I am just very nervous to call. Yes when I looked at it first, it was in tweezers and also in that amazing light that makes the diamond look great and white.
I have tried to take a photo but it is not turning out.

I think you'll be fine.
A good dealer- and you sound like you're happy with yours- wold want satisfied clients out there. Hopefully they will exchange your diamond.

If I could ask- why did you change from the H?
Also- maybe you can change back......

I just found that due to the Emerald cut being the way that it is, colour showed up and there was too much yellow in the H diamond, I am very fussy with colour and would rather see a small inclusion (my old stone was a VS2, I now have an SI1) then colour. I just called the dealer and I was advised to go to an interdependent gemmologist and see what they say before discussing an exchange/refund. I am just very puzzled as to why there is this shadow! You know the oval bow-tie effect?????? The same type of shadow is showing is my diamond, but almost throughout the entire diamond!!!!!

Do you think that the gemmologist would be able to tell me why?

Also, Gary you say, "do not look at it in direct sunlight", why is this?

Do a search on this forum and you will find many threads.
The ones about fluoro are not relevant - but the ones where diamonds go dark are.

I suspect your stone is showing a lot of dark zones.
Find an appraiser who uses an ASET - or buy one and take your own pics and post them here on this thread Catabati

Depending on the CH (crown height) in which I feel comfortable to assume there is a +/10% height in combination with a rather large table and a deep pavilion + painted pavilion step facets (low single digit angle variation between the steps) will produce the effect you are witnessing.

A scan will help.

I don''t see why you should have to see a gemmologist to get an exchange

Just say you want an exchange and leave it at that! If you are not happy she should fix it and not have to jump through hoops.

This is a possible combination (out of thousands) for the proportions you listed above that shows a lot of darkness.
Some parts of the stone should go bright with a little rocking.

I will pass all this information onto the gemmologist and get back to you about the conclusion. So just to confirm, it is the CUT, not the colour and clarity, that is causing this problem? What is ASET?
