In a ring with 5 identical diamonds which characteristics of the diamonds can be different?

I think that they must have the same carat, the same color,
can they have different proportions?

By proportions do you mean size or things such as table size? If you want a 5 stone with stones that match as closely as possible, you want the diameters to match, but you don't need everything else to match in size. However, you *do* want them to be of similar enough cuts so you don't have a blindingly gorgeous stone right next to a dull one.

The diamonds must be set to 4 flat points but slightly separated in way to be able to take more possible light

Okay, now you've completely lost me. Could you re-phrase your original question?

Do you mean like this?

Oops--sorry I thought you said "four diamonds."

Well... let me see if I can answer your question...
Let me assume that what you'd like end up with is a ring with 5 stones set in a shared prong or something simiilar.

So given these 5 stones will be side by side, IMHO these are a few things to keep in mind:

* I'd say the first thing that one notices immediately is the 'even'ness of the 5 stones. So you'll need 5 stones of the same *diameter*.

* The second thing one notices is color. So, the color of the 5 stones will have to be close in range.

* The cut of the stones will have to be quite close as well. If you have a super-ideal cut for one stone, I'd say you have to match the cut on the others as I don't think you'd want to end up with one sparkling diamond next to a dull one, as one poster said.

If you have these few items above in mind as you look for the diamonds, I'd say that the following items will take care of itself, i.e. the weight of each of the 5 stones will be close (though not necessarily the same) and the proportions of each stone (table %, depth %, etc.) will be close as dictated by each stone is cut.

I hope that helps you get started in your search.

To others -- if I'm missing anything else, please chime in, guys.

I agree with Katbadness

Above are 5 quarter carat Asscher cuts.
I pick them for size, then color.
If the stones are not cut to similar proporions, then the finished product won't look right.
They don't have to be identical- but close.

Then, of course, you need to set them properly

Not sure this thread has a clear cut conclusion, but the usual rule of thumb would say: one color grade difference works, keep them eye clean whatever this means, get the cut to match visually (for smaller rounds, this means table and diameter and one might still worry about wether this is enough depending on how much a perfect match counts).

So, actually, the exact carat weight may vary and proportions better be close (esp. the cut of the pavilion).

I would not dare make up any rules of thumb for those step cuts - as David's posts may already show. They really have to 'look' alike.

However, a set of five stones would better be recommended by the seller - it would ne Hell to find matching numbers on the web
