I'm thinking about getting my MIL diamond stud earrings. I need advice please.

My MIL and I are not close at all, so I'm not willing to shell out a lot of money for this. I'm also not sure if his sisters will try and borrow them/ how well they'll be taken care of, so again, the cheaper the better (while still being pretty). The idea came across and my husband absolutely loved it, so I'm trying to make it happen. I'm willing to take my time to find good deals on diamonds. I'd like to get this to her within a years time.

But basically, I was thinking of doing 14k white gold. I can't wear earrings, so I'm not really sure what a good size for studs are.

My thoughts were trying to find eye clean I1s in a lower color grade (maybe J?) and having them set? Yes? No?

What’s your budget and specs are you wanting? That would help to know how to direct you. If you are open to preloved items and have a limited budget you may find a pair on Looptroop and Diamond Bistro websites that are for those wanting to sell their items.

I won't lie, for specs I have no idea. I was thinking maybe 1 ctw, but my husband might think that's too small. I'm not sure what's suitable color wise or cut wise for studs. I want to keep this under $1000 and I think pre-owned would be fine. I've been looking on those websites but found nothing that I think would work. I'll keep checking them out though, since the time frame is pretty long. My husband wants to do it for her birthday next year.

You could look at buying preset studs, the likes of Blue Nile and Whiteflash sell them in 14k gold. The stones would be uncertified, though, and you’d be looking at about 0.75ctw for the budget.

Have a look at her earlobes when you next see her! That might help to decide what size would be good. I have very small earlobes and my daily wear earrings are tiny (0.3ctw). I bought good quality stones, though and they give off plenty of sparkle.

You might consider something like these, small but perfectly formed,

I upped your budget range a bit to find some options that are a bit bigger...these are .8x TCW

Edited to all:

{no clouds, reasonable numbers, no inclusions on the table}

Would pre-loved work?

You could contact Adam at Old World Diamonds and see if he can put together a pair of Old European Cuts.

You are a very sweet daughter in law. I can't say I like my mother in law, I should probably take an approach like you!

Have you considered preset studs in IDJ? :

https://idjewelry.com/0-60-carat-ro...diamond-studs-in-14k-gold-3stud-0-60-idj.html

https://idjewelry.com/1-24ct-18kt-w...d-tension-set-earrings-w-heavy-pushbacks.html a bit jazzier

https://idjewelry.com/diamond-stud-earrings. scrolling down to the bottom of the page you could get 0.75ct I-J colour, SI1s.

I would call Yekutiel at IDJ and ask him to help you. Tell him you want Pricescope quality (but lower color/possibly I1s).
See what he can come up with.

Settings at WF start at $200. These stones would look amazing plus easy upgrade if she decided she wanted to go bigger/higher color in the future.

Just throwing another option out - how would you/she feel about huggies or hoops? Much more bling for the buck.

Does your MIL have some nice gold hoops? I'm sure you can find something really nice for 300 or so, and would have more presence than diamond studs. Honestly for what you are talking about I would not do diamond studs for her, but something less expensive but more presence (solid gold, diamond pave, etc). They are real, beautiful pieces of jewelry. But not such a huge loss if they are borrowed or lost.

Often the more mature of us have larger earlobes, so perhaps if budget is an issue, pearl studs with diamond halos would give you bang for the buck.

With a tight budget, how about man made diamond? They're indistinguishable from natural mined diamonds.
With a tight budget for 1 ct size, it might be worth a consideration although this really depends on the recipient and your preference.

This is a fantastic idea, given ask, situation, and budget!

I would think most recipients would be thrilled, and they'll look sooooo expensive. Disclosure will probably be needed so that she won't get too excited. :mrgreen2:

Yes, but any way to get mil preferences before dropping 1k on a piece of jewelry (styles, man made versus real, etc). Another option is to approach a vendor like I'd jewelry and see if they have any eye cleanish i1s that could be made into earrings.
