My grandmother gave me a good amount of jewelry today, mostly costume or nothing too fancy, but there are a few rings I would like to share and get an experienced opinion on. I feel bad, these are nothin compared to some I have seen on this site. Not sure if these a real or have much value.

This one is my favorite, it looks like a black star sapphire? (I'm new at this) but I only see the star with a light reflection.
Band silver marked 925 maybe rubies on the side?:)

Another marked 925
The camera didn't capture the little details, on some of the gems you can see a wavy lines slightly different shade then the gem. The gem sometimes almost looks bluish. Also in the flowers looks like a very tiny stone...maybe just a cz but I can barley see them.

A very unique ring also marked 925

And then a couple 14k gold rings

And this is my every day ring... Not marked was told sterling silver. One of the few rings that my skin had no reaction too so if anyone can tell what it is that'd be great!

looking for opinions on quality, stone/gem ideas. I'm just starting to build a decent jewelry collection and i'm really getting interested in learning all the different aspects of quality pieces:)

Hi! It's wonderful to be handed down jewellery that has such strong sentimental value.

Ring 1
Definitely black star something. It required a strong single source of light like a pen light for the star to show.

Ring 2
Perhaps even blue sapphires and diamond chips, who knows, but it's a very feminine ring.

Ring 3
Wow, what is that? Are those stones flat topped or domed? I cannot tell by your pictures. Is it just green or does it show other colours?

Ring 4
Does it colour shift from purple to purplish red, or just stays purple? It looks a bit reddish in one other picture.

Ring 5
It's calling for a stone. :naughty:

Ring 6
Could be silver. No sign of tarnish? Turquoise in silver would be my guess.

It looks like abalone shell to me.

Great rings! I love the 14k setting and you need a stone for it ASAP. With a little polish and new stone, it will be brand new.

Lady D,
Wouldn't abalone shell be more irridiscent?

I think the first one is a black star sapphire with little rubies. The second one looks like dark blue sapphires. The third one is mother of pearl. The forth an amethyst and the last one is some sort of vintage native American ring with inset turquoise and things.

Lucky girl to have jewellery passed down this way :)) I second (third?) the opinions already given and you could try a gentle but thorough cleaning with dishwashing liquid, warm water and a very soft toothbrush to get in to all the nooks and crannies underneath the settings. Also a professional cleaning would return the older looking silver settings to the brightness of the last ring.

Some additional comments: The legs on that star look very clean and straight. If there is a gemologist where you live it would be worth taking it in to see what they think. Note that most jewellers are not necessarily gemologists.

I would agree that the 3rd one looks like abalone (paua shell) in the centre and top and bottom but from the pictures is seems the two round side stones may not be the same. Do they look the same to you?

Also interested if that 4th ring does a colour shift/change since the top photo looks positively red compared to the other two. Very pretty ring.

How lovely that you have an empty setting to fill with a new purchase!

Here are a couple pictures of the rings asked about, the gold.. I think it stays purple. That top pic was shot in poor lighting. These next ones are with natural lighting.

And then here is this one... This ring I actually got off shopgoodwill.com I got it for about 5$ if I remember right. Makes me feel like i'm in another time frame when I wear it.. kinda space age.
A favorite of mine but I never wear it, it's a bit much. But I do love it! Any ideas on time frame?

Thank you all so much for the tips:) Got excited to see replies! I will defiantly try to clean all these up soon, just makes me nervous. I did try to buff some of the silver though.

And the butterfly ring I took a close look and there may be a little bit of tarnishing starting under the butterfly where the band connects.
Again thank you all:) Luckily she also gave me her tall jewelry box which fits all and room for more!

Any ideas on time frames for these? I love antique jewelry, or anything you wont see in stores or on another near by finger.

I wait to find something for the empty spot, sadly I probably wont have the money for awhile =/

I have my grandmother's cocktail ring collection too and I cherish it. Yours are lovely! You may not be able to afford to set anything into the empty setting yet, but if you can afford to have them cleaned and polished by a jeweler, they will look brand new. You can do it yourself of course, but my own jeweler must have elves or something because she gets into nooks and crannies I could never reach and brings metal back to it's original luster. Just an idea! I also had her resize one that I was much too small for my finger and I'm really glad I can wear it now.

Lady D,
With the new pictures, I concur with your guess. I see the irridescence and the lovely blue green rainbow-like sheen which looks very much like abolone shell too.

Since the purple stays constant, it is likely to be amethyst.

If it did change what would that have made it? Love learning all abou this, and I do a lot of thrifting and such so would like to be able to spot the goods from the non goods. Thank you

If it did change, it could possibly be a synthetic sapphire.
