OK - my mom spilled the beans that for my b-day next week she "went crazy" and bought a diamond at

*gulp* Sam''s Club

(extended apologies for Sam''s Club diamond owners, of course).

She told me it''s IGI graded (yes I''ve read the loads of IGI vs.....posts) but that''s all. She''s not that into all this diamond mania like me.

I know I''m coming across as ungrateful even before I see it but I just don''t want her to get taken.

And more importantly, if it isn''t up to snuff, I would have rather spent the $$ on something from WF, GOG, or JA.

I''ve been diligently following info. here and have bought into the GIA, AGSL, AGA lab thing.

I''ve already started sweating.........

Any ideas? If it''s a beauty then great but if it''s not............(she said there''s a good return policy).

I know I''ve probably already hurt her feelings

What a whiney, diamond snob I''ve become - argh

Well, at least she is, or was, in a gift giving mood. Maybe the diamond will be really a nice one, but you better not try to compare the IGI grade with a GIA grade. There is no way you can check it on your own, so try to line up some assistance. Keep the IGI cert to yourself until you have obtained an unbiased opinion of quality and dollar value. Then, and only then, make up your mind about keeping or returning the stone. It could be a great value. Let us know how it all goes.

Thanks OM!

I pretty much figured that IGI would be a challenge. Is it possible they have improved - the US faction?

Damn, another example of being disconnected from the Matrix.

Why couldn''t I blithely go about my diamond business in the usual fog, awe and ease of others?

I will certainly post pics., info, whatever.......

Aaawww, your mom is sweet...

Why do they have to go about it in the wrong way...

Reminds me of a recent conversation between bf and his mom.

His Mom: "I found a ring at Mervyns! It''s $86 down from %120. You should use this for your engagement! What''s your gf''s ring size?"
bf: "...Ma, we''ve already ordered it. But thanks Ma..."
His Mom: "No no, you should cancel it. This is cheaper and better. What''s her ring size?"
bf: "4. But we''re not going to cancel Ma. Thanks Ma."
His Mom: "Oh...Too bad, they only size down to 6..."

Aw, it was sweet of your mom to buy you a diamond gift, my mom tells me that is for my DH to purchase, lol. I would just wait and see what it is like...I know this is Pricescope, and yes we are all a bit different than the average non-PS diamond buyer, but in this case I would just cherish the fact that your mom put thought into buying something that she thought you might like. I have actually seen some really pretty diamonds at Sam''s Club!

Thanks Choro & Diamond Dana,

I guess this thread falls somewhere between "what a nice mom & what an ungrateful daughter" & IGI are they really that bad?

Choro what if that $86 gem came your way and it was certified by IGI - heheheh

DD about a year ago I wanted an e-ring from costco and couldn''t tell a cert. from, well, a cert.

Honestly? I really think you''re worked up over nothing. So what if it''s IGI certified? This is a gift of love from your mother, which means more than who graded the stone.

Unless you just don''t like it or it''s frozen spit (which I''ve never seen at Sam''s), then don''t worry about it. Even if your mother spent more than she would have online, she bought what she wanted to, in a price range that she was comfortable with.

I''ve received jewelry from my MIL and parents that I know they''ve spent too much on, but they were excited about the pieces. I wear them with pride.

Please don''t let the IGI determine whether you keep the gift or not.

+1 in agreement!

It may not be "mind clean" if it''s graded by IGI and bought at Sam''s club, but tell your mind to butt out and let your eyes decide... I bet if you don''t dwell on it, the stone will be pretty!

Can''t wait to see pics!

She bought a diamond what? Pendant? Ring? If it is just a small stone, I wouldn''t worry too much about it. If it was expensive, then I would be very particular and would return it if you don''t love it.

Thanks for your thoughts Orbaya, FebBride, DD & Diamondseeker.

I agree, nice present, big whoop.

I just wouldn''t go with IGI but I guess she doesn''t care.

Right, don''t know what it is but it comes with a cert. (thought they do this for .25 and up?).

I''ll post pics in SMTR (although I doubt it''s a ring).
