Which one of these options would you pick for an engagement ring?

#1 An H color, round diamond in the 1.4 to 1.7 carat range. VS2 to SI1 clarity. Hearts & Arrows/Ideal cut.

#2 An I color, round diamond in the 1.7 to 1.9 carat range. VS2 to SI1 clarity. Hearts & Arrows/Ideal cut.

#3 A J color, round diamond in the 2.0 to 2.5 carat range. VS2 to SI1 clarity. Hearts & Arrows/Ideal cut. With medium blue fluorescence.

Each diamond would be set in a yellow gold band, with platinum prongs.
The price would be the same for each diamond.

I guess this would be a "size vs. color" question.

I would go for the fl. every time. Bigger diamond for the money. Should still be very white. I have an I with MB fl. and it is gorgeous and very white. (of course I have a very hard time distinguishing color) I think I am getting better at seeing color, but I don't think a J would bother me at all. There are several posters here who have lovely I-J color rings that face up incredibly white. It all depends on the level of color you are comfortable with. I would sacrifice color to go larger, but I would never sacrifice cut. I think you have your priorities right on the money. Good luck and happy hunting.

I'd pick the J over the I, but maybe the H over the other two. How many prongs? If more prongs/bezel/whatever so that the side view is more obscured, I'd take the J. If you're putting it in a very open setting where color might be more visible from the side, then the H. Just my $.02

It's too bad the I doesn't have fluor.

But, since it doesn't, I'd pick the H all day.

J with med. flour. If it's well cut it will face up like a G--and all people see is size & sparkle.

I'd go for the I color. The size is still great and an ideal cut I would be white and gorgeous. I'm afraid that a J in that large of a size may show a bit of yellow.

hmmmm..i think i would go for the 1.7 H SI...eye clean of course..

nice choices...tough choices!

Definitely number 1.

#1 the best combo H vs2-si1

Right now, I'd pick #1, mostly because I'd be terribly uncomfortable wearing big stones, and I classify 1+ ct as big.

Give me five years, though, and I bet I'd be ready to take on that J.

I'd go for #3

- med blue fl should be nice add

- well cut J will be very bright and can go in Plat

- size does matter, but you will need to choose your setting carefully

Only caution is a good SI1 is a bit of a treasure hunt. You know a VVS is eyeclean but you need to inspect the SI1 before buying. The price savings justify the hunt

Picked the J because you get more eyecandy for the $ and: I find it hard to notice the color difference; don't think icy white really adds to the beauty
