Would you really want to survive it? There would be no food, water could be contaminated, you might be alone... No power, no transportation. I would rather die than survive under those conditions. Guess I don't have a "survivors mentality".

Yes...because we've got a lot of guns.

No. I'd hate to see what would become of humanity when all hell broke loose.

Funny, I've thought about that, like in case of war, and believe me, there's one coming. Say, if it went nuclear: would I want to survive? I guess the question is, would you want to live in the Stone Age? I wouldn't want to croak as long as those I'm here to protect -- family -- were still alive & needed me. It's one of those situations where you don't know what you'd do until it happens to you.

What's happening on Dec. 21? And if there's no food and contaminated water, how will guns help? Are you assuming there'll be *some* food and fresh water so you can use the guns to shoot and kill who and whatever is in the way of you and these resources?

hmmm, would I want to survive a nuclear holocaust...I have to admit one of the first things I'd think of is great, now I don't have to feel guilty about not having had a solid retirement plan!

Nothing's happening on Dec 21st. Except of course, increased panic gift-shopping due to the increasingly looming holiday.

However, according to someone who made some pretty crazy base assumptions and squinted juuuuust so when he translated some old Mayan stuff, the world is "coming to an end" on Dec 21st, whatever "end" means (rather than, hey, we Mayan astronomers finally got to the end of our convoluted calendar, and hey! We just don't feel like doing any more freakin' calculations, OK???). No one can ever get past the base prediction on that one, and pretty much insert whatever they think "end" means.

I think we just love to contemplate various apocalypses (apocali?). "What would you do if...(insert worst dystopian vision of future you can dream up)"? It's like telling ghost stories around the campfire complete with delightful little frissons of terror.

I would not like to survive a nuclear blast only to die of radiation poisioning later. No way. If I had a gun I'd shoot myself.

But my preferred method of suicide would be pills. My husband and I would help each other.

Has anyone read the book On the Beach? I thought it was really interesting.

I live on a military base so I would hope that there would be provisions to look after the families if something went wrong. But I don't think the world will end on 21st December. It had better not, I haven't finished saving up for my new diamond yet!

OK...what gives. The word "calendar" in my previous post is linked and has an advert pop-up, and Maria D.'s "retirement plan" is also linked, although not to an ad.

Is this new on PS? A browser option? I've noticed these lately on other sites, but here?

I'm using Chrome....anyone?

I'm using Chrome...don't see any links.

I don't think about things like this in terms of want; fate, luck, God, the universe, whatever you'd like to accredit it to, some would live and some would die. If I lived I would continue to try and survive- life is sweet even in the most difficult of situations and I don't see myself choosing to give it up lightly. I have too much life left to live, too much time left to spend with my husband and my family. And I think I have the skills and the supplies to make a decent go of it.

I'm using Safari and don't see any links...but what happens when you click on my retirement plan???? Haha, that would be great if there was one out there for me in cyberspace.

eta: ksinger, check your extensions in Chrome. You may have inadvertently added an extension that is causing ads to appear as links.

I've had this happen before and it was a virus on my computer. Maybe run a scan with your security software?

This is funny!

I wouldn't want to survive a nuclear attack. I imagine it would just be cockroaches and rats; a bunch of desperate, ill and maimed people under dire circumstances, and me. Well, maybe the cockroaches and/or won't survive. Either way, no thanks.

It's not really a virus (I found) but a sneaky browser extension that often piggybacks on legitimate things like (I kid you not) Notepad++, Toad, and SiteAdvisor (by McAfee no less) and generally infects only the individual browser.

I wiped my cache and cookies, the deleted SiteAdvisor extension. Voila! Problem solved.

I want to be hit squarely on the head with the meteor . . . if that's what happens. :cheeky:

I don't want to be left to deal with the aftermath of any such event. I'm ready to meet my maker in the first wave of casualties.

Someone once said that the only things that would still be around after a nuclear war was cockroaches and Cher.

If the Mayans had any real insight into the future, they would have seen the collapse of their own civilization (helped along by the Spanish) long before 2012. So I'm not too worried.

Hmmm....

If the world were to actually end on Dec 21 (or any other day) - we (or at least our physical bodies) would end with it. Thus, we would not be around to wonder about how survival would be like.

On the other hand; should there be a major disaster that kills Millions and affects a good portion of the world (or even all of the world); Then those far enough away not to be killed outright would have to face survival.

Those in the NE recently had a minor experience with Sandy. Others have had worse experiences over the recorded history of mankind.

Guess what - in most cases a good portion of the population figures out how to survive. In some cases only a small portion of the population survives due to illness or food shortages.

If people would only have food and water in their house to just last a week you would have a much better chance of survival; 2-3 weeks and you will outlive most others if the even of total disruption in the food supply. In the end guns and other weapons will be used to steal or protect resources; and people will group together. How well they survive depends on the situation and the local weather and resources (example - I an 2 blocks from a river so water is available).

As far as a nuclear holocaust goes. The fears of radiation poisoning is totally overblown. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki people who did not die from radiation in the first week lived for decades. Those with that level of radiation were very close to the blast. Many times more were killed from the heat, fire, and shockwave from the blast. The concerns with full scale nuclear holocaust is not radiation poisoning; its "nuclear winter" from all of the dust kicked up into the atmosphere and the resulting lack of sunshine and change in weather patterns leading to crop failures (and the movie "on the beach" or whatever the title got it all wrong about how and why people would die).

Anyway, I intend to enjoy Dec 21 - come what may.

Have a great day,

Perry

See my friends and I are being proactive about the whole thing.

The 21st will see us having a massive Domsday party so that if the world ends, we spend our last moments having a blast  . Of course since we are taking this seriously and we all have different backgrounds and beliefs we will be prepared and dressed a bit differently. Some are going hardcore survivalist and thinking practical thoughts, some seem to have given up and aim to be as beautiful as possible when they die. Me, I'm sure the zombies are going to take over the world, so I'm planning on dressing as one so that I can fool them into believing that I am one of them so they don't eat me.

See I'm smart :wink2: , but now I'm starting to consider the fact that I am completely useless when it comes to survival stuff like left and right. So I better pack some sexy stuff too, that way after escaping the zombies I can find a big strong caveman to protect me.
