is there an easy way I could have just the prongs changed to a white metal?

I''m thinking of getting a ready-made setting and the prongs come in yellow gold. The online vendor only has pics of the platinum version of the setting. I have read everyone''s arguments for white metal prongs, but I think I will probably like the yg ones. Still...I would like the option of changing the prongs if I don''t like them...

Would that be pretty easy?

Thanks for the help!

Hello,

I''m no jeweller, but I''d imagine from recent discussions you could have the YG prongs rhodium-plated to appear white.
However, they likely won''t look as white as WG or plat, and will need replating over time.

I would suggest trying on a setting with all YG (body and prongs) in a store to be sure you like it. I have a rose gold setting all in one colour and really like it, but its not for everyone.

good luck !

Depending on the setting itself, you may be able to change the head over, but it might even work out cheaper to get a whole new setting altogether. Have you asked the vendor if they can do wgold prongs in that particular setting? Honestly, I havn''t seen many settings that can''t be two tone.

Can you find another vendor with a similar setting? Have you got a link to the setting?

Sorry for so many questions, just curious as to why they can''t do a white metal head on a ygold band (which is what i have, but a simply solitaire only).

Arjuanjane - Thanks for the response. You''re absolutely right that I should actually go and try on the rings with yg prongs...It''s so hard to find a jeweler that carries them! Your ring is actually one that convinced me I would probably love the non-white prongs. Your ring is gorgeous!

Honey - I was wondering myself why the vendor couldn''t just do something about the prongs. He said that if I wanted white metal prongs, I would have to go custom (which I''m hoping not to do). I''m actually looking at a couple Vatche settings...maybe you can''t change those without voiding a warranty or something...Btw, honey your ring is also beautiful! congrats on your upcoming wedding!

What is the setting? You might be able to have the head replaced if it isn''t integrated...

You could also theoretically rhodium plate them, but the problem is that the rhodium won''t be able to get into really tight spots like where the prongs hit the diamond, so it might look a bit spotted potentially.

Hello, you''re welcome, and thankyou for the compliment.
I dunno it sounds as if you''re not entirely convinced? It does seem odd they can''t do it 2tone for you.
In all honesty, if this is for an ering with a diamond, I would go for prongs in a white metal. Its just more classic imho. If its a coloured stone or RHR, than thats a different story

You know what, that seems odd that Vatche would want to make that setting in one colour imo.
I think it is alot better suited to having white prongs - actually, if it were me I''d have just the shank yellow and the top section all white.
But, of course its not me, its you!

What do you think?

It seemed odd to me as well....hmmm...

Initially, that''s exactly what I wanted - white gold top and yellow gold shank. But when I found out it didn''t come that way, I was trying to love the all yellow gold look. It''s so hard without even having pictures to look at!

It means alot that you recommend the white metal prongs since I know you actually like the colored prongs...maybe I should just consider going custom.

I also asked about Musey''s beautiful setting (Musey, you have amazing taste!) and he said that one comes in all yg as well.

I would not advise buying the ring in hopes of changing the prong color- it would be a lot of work to change the head in that (very pretty!) ring.
Plating white prongs yellow is also a poor solution for the long run.
I say you need to really make up your mind before you order.
I would think that the ring can be ordered in two tone- but changing an existing one would be tough.

Have you contacted Excel directly with this question? I was looking at one of their settings and asked a question and they responded quickly. It wouldn't hurt. Hope that helps. I love this design, but would only advise doing it with a yellow shank and white prongs, or all white. I agree that rhodium plating after the fact would not be ideal, and it would also require more maintenance.

I agree that white colored prongs are "the norm", and that concerns about yellow prongs affecting the color of a colorless stone are valid..... - BUT- if someone really loves yellow gold, prongs can look very nice in yellow.

Vatche can make their designs in white gold if desired. Just contact the vendor about it and they should be able to do this for you.

It has been my experience that even if white is more classic and common... yellow gold prongs can make a stone look whiter.

I was curious what arunajane''s thoughts were on this because you wear yellow gold and can see first hand how the color of metal can affect a diamond''s appearance.

i was unhappy with my H color studs (wish I got f or g color after the fact) set in white gold and after having them dipped in yellow gold... the stones look MUCH brighter and more white!

I think my setting would look gorgeous in yellow gold. I'd love to see a picture of that!

Maybe the option choice is yg shank and platinum head? That would probably be the preferred solution. Almost all yg e-rings have a white metal head. I''d call and ask them. I definitely would want the stones set in white metal.

I have yellow gold prongs and I love them. No one has ever said I should change them.
