Hey all,
I read in the tutorial that: "A H&A''s viewer does not show light leakage and an Ideal-Scope will not show heart patterns"

Can someone please help me understand how these two devices are different? They seem, to me at least, to have the same concept behind them.

The reason I ask is that my local jeweler has an H&A viewer and I just ordered an IdealScope. I just want to be informed on why the H&A viewer does NOT show light leakage, contrary to what my jeweler states. (I don''t like being rude to my jeweler, but I would like to educate them on the Ideal Scope).

Thanks all!!

They both used structured lighting - but with diffferent ''structures''.

The H&A''s viewer does not use any backlight, so you can not use it to show leakage.
Bt the Ideal-Scope will also indicate symmetry past what I believe is the point where humans can get any benefit.

H&A''s is a mind thing. Ideal-scope is a simple qualitative grading tool that is intuitive to use. Many people from labs etc have asked me to develop it as a grading tool with standards. I refuse because it is not quanititative.

Thanks Garry, I didn''t even think about the lighting that comes from behind the diamond under an Ideal Scope. Now that I think about it, the H&A viewer had the diamond sitting on black plastic. Makes perfect sense now!
