hey guys I was wondering what does CUT RATING REALLY tell ? I mean all of those websites sell diamonds and they all have IDEAL CUTS, what is IDEAL to them? Are they talking brilliance, fire and all this stuff? Is it possible that even though the diamond is IDEAL it is DULL? I mean what is the difference between an IDEAL and GOOD cut? I am confused. I was thinking that if i buy an IDEAL CUT diamond then IT WILL have more brilliance and fire and sparkle then the GOOD cut. I know all of this depends on the way the diamond was cut.. not to deep and not to shallow so it would create all of this effects. SO an IDEAL cut is the one which has the best proportions? OR WHAT? please explain it to me??? THANK YOU!

I want to buy a PRINCESS IDEAL CUT... does this guarantee me that it will have all the brilliance and fire? or it doesn`t tell me anything..

Sorry for the confusion... it shouldn''t be like that.

It seems that every seller (or lab) has a different set of criteria for their "ideal". All claim to produce more "fire and brilliance" but only a few give some explanation why their standard works and how well.

Are you talking about a round brilliant ? For those the tutorial here helps - even if not all sellers give all that information, the technical story gives reasonably good refference about what to look for regardless of sellers'' presentations, IMO.

actually i am talking about Princess cut... Anybody has an experience with WHITEFLASH IDEAL PRINCESS CUTS?? I`m thinking of ordering one tomorrow morning...since its an online purchase without actually seeing i`m trying to figure out what can i at least expect from them...

Hey D326 again,

As far as I know, the "ideal" princess cuts won''t be out until May. I doubt they will be plentiful but you need one now. WF is great to deal with according to PS''ers and the pics prove it. I would assume that if they say it''s ideal it''s a good one. "Ideal" means that it''s cut for beauty, brilliance and fire, not just weight retention. However, RB''s are the only ones with actual standards to go by right this minute. Princesses are on the way.

Are you planning on having it set this week too?

From the last email i have received from WHITEFLASH (LESLEY) I was told that I may be able to have it by saturday.. Well..I was told that if i decide today i will have it set and should be here by FRIDAY..now I think my last chance is TOMORROW!.. at least I hope so... I was at work whole day, no chance to get in contact with WHITEFLASH.... I`m thinking of a 1.25 princess cut set in one of the VATCHE settings.. either...Reverse V & Double Prong, by Vatche or X-Prong Princess Channel, by Vatche.. I LOVE BOTH OF them and I think my GF would love either of them... I REALLY WANT THIS ring to be BRILLIANT and SPARKLY... I know that my GF would rather have a 1.25 with lots of BRILLIANCE and fire then a DULL glass looking 1.50.... I was also thinking do i need to have a DIAMOND with a big CROWN HIGHT in order for it too look good in those 2 settings?

Go to www.gemappraisers.com and click on Old DIY Cut Grading. Then click on princess from the drop down menu. You can input diamond info and determine it''s cut grade. If you scroll down you''ll see a chart with info. You''ll find that these specs overlap leaving what appears to be a wide range of specs in several different cut grades.

There are no perfect tables and depths. There are good ranges to shoot for and combinations of specs that may not be desirable alone but combined can become a winner. There is a lot of good reading on that website as well. Look on WF website and use the chart to help you. The crown info isn''t usually available unfortunately. Hopefully this will help.

No idea... looking on WF's website, I can't see "ideal cut princess" anywhere.

Speaking of sparkle, these guys use the IdealScope and those pics do tell something, IMO.

Is there one at hand ?

Btw. the AGA tables do not predict brilliance. That standard has other details in mind.

if you do a loose diamond search you will be able to see the CUT type and there is PLENTY of IDEAL...now there is not firescope pics for those diamonds.. the only diamonds that come with the firescope pics are the ones that are EXPERT SELECTION... none of the EXPERT SELECTION ones are in my money RANGE...i`m looking for something between 1.00 and 1.50 carat.. there are few at 1.00 but i think thats too small and one at like 1.52 which is too expensive.. for me..

I don''t know your budget but look at these. They are under $8,000 and they aren''t as deeply cut as some.

These aren''t too bad either. 5051248 4579736

There are a lot of them out very reasonably priced there if you go down in color and clarity and go with a very good cut. I searched between G and I, VS1 and SI1, Ideal and very good cut. Just be careful of that depth or you will be paying for a 1.25 or 1.5 that looks smaller. Look at the diameters as well. Signing off....

From what I can recall, you are considering out of house diamonds, virtual ones from WF''s search tool. Not in house diamonds. If you have the Saturday deadline, you better hustle because those diamonds have to be brought in and checked out first.

I know others have told you this but SERIOUSLY CONSIDER nixing this Saturday deadline, you may end up making a rash decision on a stone you aren''t even sure about. Some people consider diamonds for weeks or a month before making a decision.

It''s alot of $$...so just spend it wisely and honestly...does it need to be THIS Saturday? Why not next?

Lastly, for Princess cut stones, make sure to get an IdealScope image...as the ES stones at WF do...that is crucial because light return for fancies can be hit or miss even if numbers are good.

Good luck.

If you decide to look elsewhere than WF and still keep this Saturday deadline...here are some good looking options from what I can tell..not a Princess expert though.

DCD Signature Princess, diamond pic looks nice, ask for an IDealScope image.

SuperbCert Signature Princess, complete with IdealScope, Sarin, close up mags.

Another SuperbCert Signature Princess, complete with IdealScope, Sarin, close up mags.

One more, complete with IdealScope, Sarin, close up mags.

and one last one...complete with IdealScope, Sarin, close up mags.

I can see WF doesn't have much in inventory right now...I have to say I would not feel comfortable doing a virtual stone with your timeline..but it's your money! Good luck.

Oh edited to add that Excel/SuperbCert also sells Vatche, so you could get the stone AND setting from them as well. As much as I love WF...they don't have the inventory in-house for your timeline, so I would look at people who do. IF you decide to try to make the Saturday date that is!

Ewwwww.... ''guess I never clicked that button.

If you look at the explanation of "Ideal Cut" (click on the "CUT" word) - there''s one page about rounds and that''s it. Nothing about other shapes - for all the good reasons.

The search engine at WF must be using sme rule of thumb on the existing data (depth & table most likely, if not all the GIA stats). Same as Blue Nile''s (aside the Signature Collection) and DCD and probably 100 other sellers. Those numbers do not describe "brilliance". Too bad there isn''t a clear explanation there

The stones in the "Expert Selection" at WF come with enough info on cut, but they do not call fancies "Ideals" for lack of a widely accepted standard.

what do you think about this diamond from BLUE NILE??
Every detail notes sounds nice... but I really do not know how to relate those numbers to brilliance

If you take BN's word for it, why not.

One thing is pretty clear: this stone is relatively large for the weight allright, but the price could well be for a piece close to 1.5 carats and at least as large. The premium on the "Signature" takes care of such advantage. What if anything makes these stones brighter than the average - it is less clear to me.

An ideal diamond is one someone gives you for free with no strings attached :)

Is this what the "ideal cut crusade" was all about ?

Whiteflash doe not drop ship and Brian, the cutter, usually looks at every stone before it goes out to the customer. If it does not meet their standards, they will send it back to the dealer.

Have you discussed this stone or other possibilities with Brian? I bought a stone from Whiteflash that was not in their inventory. A dealer is more likely to be honest about describing the stone ot a Pricescope vendor if they know the vendor will see it before it is shipped to the customer. They do not want to go to the trouble and expense of shipping if they know they are likely to get it back.

Lesley had it shipped to them and Brian discussed the stone with me at length. They then had it shipped to an appraiser of my choice from the Pricescope list, where I could see the stone.

Once I approved, it was sent back to Whiteflash for setting and I did not have to pay Whiteflash for the ring until the day bfore it was shipped. It all moved very quickly because of overnight Fed-ex.

Some of the other possibilities from other vendors sound promising too. But you really should be able to discuss the stone with someone who has it in hand before you make a decision.
