I had our diamonds checked and ends up the lowest clarity has two small chips in the girdle. A recut would be ideal but we could also just put the diamond into a bezel and call it a day. I know that even resetting the stone has risk of further damaged just like having it recut would, I’ve spoken to my husband about this and we just want to know what would others do?

Also if anyone has any horror or success stories feel free to share!

What are the specs?

I was wondering if the cutter was able to tell you if the feather expanded or it was like that from the beginning?

It’s still in a setting so he wasn’t able to examine it in depth

To your eyes - is it sparkly?

@KKJohnson what are they charging for the recut?

I am wary of recutting a stone with a significant feather like that. Maybe polishing the girdle, but I don't see how they could do a recut without huge risk. I'd put it in a bezel pendant if you want to keep it.

Just don't insure for that amount (if you were going to insure at all), because that is an inflated value.

Can they give you an estimate of how much weight and diameter it will lose?

He able to go into specifics since it was still in a setting but it would be recut to “match” a slightly smaller diamond to make a pair of earrings

That is how I feel about the large inclusion as well but he felt that it was going to be a problem, of course there is no guarantee. This would be made into a pair of earrings

Correction he felt it was NOT going to be a problem but of course there is no guarantee

Hm.. I paid $325ct for my recuts and they came back AGS ideal. The first recut was the one with the crack and bgd was able to completely remove it. If that is not possible, I am not sure if it is worth the money. The stone will lose weight and the clarity won’t improve, so the stone is likely going to lose value. If they can’t significantly improve the cut, I am not sure if the endeavor is worth it. You will also have to redo the appraisal afterwards which is another expense. I think that if you bezel the stones, you won’t see much of a difference especially on your ears, but up to you in the end!

If they’re sparkly... maybe it’s fine to just leave them as-is.

Would a super ideal be worth risking no diamond (if it broke)?

Some food for thought:

One of my favourite artists has a floral painting called, “As it is”. I adore it. It reminds me to take things (and life!) as it is.

She has this one I found: beauty in imperfection. https://theavenuegallery.com/artwork/beauty-in-imperfection/

So if you don’t recut, love them as the perfectly imperfect specimens that they are :)

Srikumar Rao has a good speech on the net and he says: we wouldn’t look at a scenic view of mountains, trees, and sunset, and say, “Wow, how beautiful. But... the tree on the left is a little off. Maybe if it were a little shorter. And that centre mountain is too dark.” Lol ;) We just stand in awe of the beauty and accept it as it is! Why don’t we do that for other things?

Ok I’m getting totally philosophical here. And if it were me, I’ve got a gambler’s spirit, so is probably recut. But I wanted you to have these nice thoughts to fall back on in case you didn’t recut :)

Thank you for this! I really appreciate your opinion on this since you did a recut as well, it’s very hard because I am hoping the outcome ends up nicer than he said. Even if the clarity rating doesn’t improved because of the feather I would be happy if he was able to remove the other imperfections.

All wishful thinking on my part.

After much consideration I’m just going to leave them as is and see about getting them bezeled and haloed. Thank you everyone!

I had my 2.25 recut by Brian Gavin. I gotta tell ya, it was so sparkly to begin with, but it had a nick on the girdle and open culet, which is not my personal preference. I WAS bezeling it even, but I went ahead with the recut and never looked back. It's in a prong set 3-stone now. I'd say do it.
