Whoops...

accidentally pressed enter when i wrote the subject line.

Anyway, I walked into a B&M today (Ok, may as well say Tiffanys), and asked for the details of a particular diamond there. She wrote it down on a piece of paper, and i didn't really look at it until later:

62.6
56
15.5
35
No culet.

Unforunately I didn't see the 15.5 until afterwards, and I'm not sure how this translates into something I can feed into the HCA. Does anyone have experience with Tiffany reports and can help decipher? Or will i need more information?

Thanks!

PS - it was an RB, I, VS2, 1.05 carat diamond.
PPS - I'm aware of other buying options, but for a number of reasons Tiffany is a viable one for me!

15.5 is crown height.

you''re missing the pavilion angle.

Ok I''m back -

First diamond:
Depth 62.6
Table 56
Crown angle 35.1
Pavilion angle 43.5

Second diamond
Depth 61.5
Table 57
Crown angle 34.6
Pavilion angle 42.9

I tried plugging these numbers into the HCA but just got a dialog box informing me that the girdle in both was ''dangerously thin'' - does this mean the diamond could chip easily? this sounds like a fairly big issue...

Thanks

If this isn''t an option I''ll probably go back to one of these:

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamonds/Matching_Compare.aspx?oldID=46790&newID=1445143

which will be of comparable cost (after setting, taxes etc).

Both pavilion angles are very deep, way too deep. Sounds like there is probably a mistake there.

Some basic geometry gives the max pavilion angles to be #1) 43.3 and #2) 43 degrees, with 0 girdle thickness. So both numbers are impossible and not actual measurements.

Tiffany use pavilion depth not angles.

Tiffany use pavilion depth not angles.

If that is the case, stone 2 is a good candidate with. Stone 1 is a no.

Yep!

Thanks guys!

Can i ask for a little detail over why stone 2 is a good candidate and stone 1 isn''t?

Just curious...

And what does Pavilion Depth equate to in angles?

Cheers in advance :)

Simple geometry gives the pav angle to roughly 40.6 degrees for stone 2.

It is in the safe range, while #1 is in the steep deep range.

Thanks for that.

Sorry to take it step by step, just want to make sure I'm not making any mistakes.

So plugging a Pavilion angle of 40.6 into HCA I come out with 0.8, Which falls into both AGS Ideal and GIA Excellent candidture. The best thing to do now would be to eyeball the diamond (and use loupe) to make sure there are no major issues, but I would hope that the combination of passing HCA and coming through Tiffanys would mean a great stone.

Are there any other checks to tick off before purchase?

This could be the one!

oh and forgot to mention this second diamond is the same size, I/VS1, Tiffany ex cut

That''s good as a plan.

Please make sure you check it out as carefully as you can and compare with others to make sure this is the one for you. It should be a good stone from the info we have but make sure you like it.

Just thought I''d add to my thread instead of starting another:

So I asked about the process of ring sizing etc at Tiffany. The SA told me that all Tiffany engagement rings are in size 6, and that they will be resized once for free post-purchase (presumedly after the customer comes in for a sizing)

Is this true? Without opening a can of worms (I hope), it seems a rather ''mass market'' approach to jewellry.

The reason I ask is that I''m about 80% sure my gf''s ring size is 4.5 (and I can''t get to 100% without arousing suspicions), which isn''t enough to take a punt and waive a free ring sizing when I can just get a standard size 6 - and after the excietment of the proposal - take her in to get an exact fit.

Thanks in advance...

It''s very simple...which one sings to you? Is it in your price range, and do you have your heart set on getting her a T&Co ring?

I''d certainly be happy to have #2, but you really need to know her ring size. You could always give it to her in a 6 and then have it sized, but how terrible it would be to get engaged and then have to give up the ring for a week or two! Does she wear a ring on that finger now that you could take to a jeweler and find out the size?
