My friend, who is proposing this week told me that he got a 1.30 G VVS1 stone in a platinum solitaire setting for $6500, and he got it from a local jewelry store. That sounded too good to be true to me.

Would this price be possible if the cut is lower or something? I probably shouldn't say anything to him to avoid dampening his mood but I can't help wondering whether I should.

could be uncerted - on the store's say-so, could be IGI/EGL/one of the many others in the alphabet soup

Not a chance of it being a GIA/AGS stone unless he bought it second hand on a fantastic deal, so no point in hunting for such a 'deal' yourself, sadly!

Gently suggest that it's in his best interest to get it appraised by an INDEPENDENT appraiser both for purposes of insurance and for understanding what he got. Then stay out of it. He may or may not take your advice but you're right to avoid pusing it.

I agree with the above that the deal described is unlikely to be true but there's no way to go farther than that without a pro actually inspecting the merchandise.

Ok I got the details. It is GIA certified and Excellent cut, and he already insured it using the appraisal letter. He said the starting price was $11K but dropped down to $6.5K I guess he got a good deal after all.

Perhaps it was clarity enhanced?

I guess, or maybe it was an EGL certification as opposed to a GIA.

don't sound right. somebody is B.Sing ...the buyer or the seller??...

People's feelings get hurt if they get ripped off or think they got a good deal but didn't especially men. I would tend to say nothing unless I was asked a specific question. Just my opinion.

And I agree! Good price is possible! Why search for more if there is no reason?

This might be far fetched but he also might have paid a lot more and just didn't want you thinking he would spend that much. I know when we bought my upgrade diamond a few close friends asked what we paid and we just said around XXX amount. We just froze and low balled it. We didn't want them to know how much we spent on a diamond in this economy when they were hurting financially.

+1

Yeah, something is not right. He did not ask your opinion so leave it at that. Me thinks there is some bluffing going on among men here ;))

Maybe he really bought a GIA certified diamond on a platinum setting but he got it on Ebay and it is a used ring, so he didin't want to tell you the truth about it and he lied when he said that he bought it from a B&M store...Better not ask him again about it and put him in a difficult position...

In the end I didn't say anything to him and didn't ask anything more on the issue. In fact he volunteered the information without me asking in the first place, so I am OK I guess.
He said he got it from the local store of a company called Charleston Diamond importers, which also has online business as well. But they also sell EGL graded diamonds which are cheaper, might be one of those. In any case, it sounds like a good deal and I wish them happiness.
